ugh. I'm sorry, but the fact that an off duty cop has nothing better to do than pace someone on a highway (who is only 15 over the PSL) really irritates me. THEY drive as fast as they please while off or on duty, and it's "ok." =( He must have been really desperate to help his buddy write an extra traffic ticket.
Don't know for sure how much it will cost you. I would guess somewhere between $150-200.

you're blaming the officers for him getting a ticket while speeding? :hmmmm2:
sorry to hear of your ticket...but at least you realize and admitted you were at fault.

No, of course it's not the officer's fault. I just am irritated by the fact that an OFF DUTY cop felt the need to call in someone who was merely speeding. Not denying that the original poster was breaking the law - he was.

There's not much you can do to avoid being paced, besides being vigilant and learning the headlight patterns for cop cars.
No idea what the fine will be like, but you might wanna go to court and see if you can plead it down at all.
You might wanna post your story in the How to Beat Your Ticket forum and ask for advice if you haven't already done so.

I got nailed in NY Thruway for 83 in a 65 with Laser, V1 was still new and the tones not familiar to me, especially laser and i took WAY too long to react to it. Doesnt matter anyway, MOST likely, with those dead eye thruway cops, the guy had my speed fast enough that even had i reacted i was toast. but that's neither here nor there, youre after a possible total ticket cost and I would guess somewhere between 200 and 250, especially if your out of state. They throw a "Surcharge" on there after the ticket total. Dont ask me what the Surcharge is, it doesnt say it just simply says "Surcharge". Not "Processing surcharge" or even "state surcharge" or anything... just simply "surcharge". Which leads em to believe its the "out of state driver, he wont want to come back to contest because it will cost him more in gas then to just pay this ticket surcharge". My ticket was $175 + $85 surcharge for a grand total of $260. NY traffic citations can suck it. :D
The good news is, if you start socking away $30 or $35 a week until you get the ticket, you'll probably have close to enough to pay it when it arrives. It took 6 weeks for mine to come after i sent in the ticket to the court. Course that was through the holidays, so maybe 4 - 5 weeks for yours? hard telling, but thats what I would expect. Where are you from, like how far from where you got the citation do you live? You still in NY? Out of state? The further away you are the more the surcharge will be im sure, lol.

I read your story. First of, you need to check your mirrors every 5-7 seconds...to make sure nobody is pacing or following you, doesn't matter it's an off duty cop or some psycho.
The following would work if the on duty trooper didn't clock you:
You said it was an off duty cop who tailed you, excellent. An off duty cop was driving his private vehicle, right?
I'll bet you dinner, that his private vehicle speedo isn't calibrated nor certified, PLUS he would have to show up in court to testify with the other LEO and I don't think the judge would like to see he was off duty, trying to perform official duties with a private car......it may not mess up his case, but I don't think it would help either.
The next thing we need to know is exactly what the on duty trooper said to you and what you said to him.
From you story it sounds like he had his Radar on Instant on/moving mode and just zapped you, this is why it's important to pay attention to your 6 o'clock.

It's a good lesson for all of us.
Inattention while rolling down the highway is gonna cost sooner or later. We all need to be more attentive as state and local revenues are crushed by the "recession" and its far-reaching effects. That "grace zone" of being able to roll 10 or 15mph over the PSL on the highway is getting smaller and smaller. I read an article a week or two ago concerning very serious problems NYS will face as it is the epicenter of financial activity...it will be affected severely as financial firms close up, employees are jobless and service businesses fail. The article went so far as to suggest NYS will declare bankruptcy. Do the peace officers need to help offset this revenue shortfall? Think about it ;) and watch your back wherever you travel.

If NY is like NC the ticket cost will be the least of your worries, insurance premiums for the next 3 to 5 :(. They want your money more than the state does, lol. You might consider an attorney to bail you out if possible, in the long run it may be cheaper, it was for two of my boys. They got RD’s and practical knowledge protection now and best their outta the house and have their own policies!! :D

Yea another thing, these clowns (insurance companies) are suppling speed enforcement technology to the State and local police. Seems almost hypocritical. Oh well, anything for the mighty dollar.

Maybe I am naive, but, honestly, do off duty cops have permission (legally) to speed like this?
I would go to court, question the validity that if this is normal practice to have off duty cops pace or tailgate you or whatever. You might just have the judge question the officer's/department's motives.

Well, I doubt if they have express permission to speed, but I strongly suspect that you would be hard pressed to find an officer that would ticket a fellow officer (on or off duty) for speeding. So basically they can speed without consequences.
I just find it so strange that an off duty officer would even care about someone going 15 over the PSL. I mean, maybe if there was some other reckless driving offense along with the speed violation, but still... I think in the three or four years I've had my scanner, I've heard a report maybe one time come in from an off duty cop that was behind someone driving recklessly or stolen vehicle, etc.
Anyways, like some others have said, it's a good reminder to be careful and always know what is in your immediate area when driving.
