Flash your lights at oncoming drivers.
I usually raise my right hand in a stop motion to get peoples attention behind me then motion to slow down. If they look at me like why? I show 5 fingers then 0 with my hand or put 1 finger up and make a small circle like a siren then point in direction I think the LEO is in. It may sound weird but most people understand me when I do it. They at least know Im doing it for a reason and not slowing to be a prick. If they decide to pass and get a ticket then its their own fault.
I think the the appropriate sign for cop is your finger in a circle. That's what my dad taught me when I was learning to drive, he taught me all the important stuff.
You are kidding right? Flash your lights!
Also, for a hot girl driving next to you, I use the 5-0 hand signal sometimes.... but they never get it.
For friends behind me I tap my brakes real fast repeatedly (and lightly). I have also, done driving with my lights off and if there is a cop I turn them on (during the day). At night, if they are out front, I turn on my fogs if there is a cop.
If a red Corvette suddenly slows from 90 to 65 that should be the only signal you need.
I know when I was following a Maserati at over 100 and he suddenly veered and took the exit ramp last second I followed. I didn't know he had spotted the LEO but I knew something was up. The poor guy in the Impala SS following me took the IO shot and the ticket.
I try to wave but I doubt they can see through the tinted windows.
Alot people don't understand the 5-0 hand signal???:stupid::stupid:
Oh yeah.... on a motorcycle tap your helmet. I have never seen a biker do this while I was driving in my car, but if you see it, it means cop.
Becareful that a cop is not looking, you will get a ticket for failure to turn off your high beams, may want to use fog lights if you think a cop maybe looking.
It's a non-mover so not a big risk and generally not of much interest to DPS. They know drivers do it.
Three to four series of two flashes is overkill but if it's a nasty trap then I might do it. I usually go two short highbeam flashes. At night I use the fogs to flash.
For serious ramp ups I will move to the right and tap the brake lights twice.
Also, for any potentially serious road hazard, (backed-up traffic ahead, couch in the road, dead deer, patrol car stopped in the road.) I hit the hazards and leave them on until I'm stopped or clear of the hazard.
I don't recommend suddenly exiting or suddenly doing anything for that matter. You want to keep you driving inputs smooth and that includes the ones for evading speed traps.
Smooth driving looks like slow driving and tends not to attract attention.
It's interesting to know that LEO know's how motorist warn other driver's. It's being taught during their training. I'll post a copy of the page when I have time.
for people behind me i tap my brakes 3 times....then again...if the guy is an asshole il just let him go tho :D
If it is a punk kid speeding and reckless driving (I am only 17, but I hate punks) or anyone for that matter, I could give two craps. It's my Radar Detector. Get your own if you want to be protected is my motto! :D Just depends on my mood.
All I know is that in Northern Indiana, just about everyone that drives knows that when you flash your brights (when they are going in the opposite direction), it means COP. For in front of you, I guess you could do the same, but it wouldn't be very effective in the day.
As for behind, If I am braking for no particular reason, no one is slowing down in front of me, and drop 15MPH, if they have a few brain cells, they will slow down. We have a lot of idiot drivers out here so I guess most would pass you, and I will laugh at you as you pass by. If I was in a great mood, I would go by real slow, roll down my passenger window, and laugh at them as they pull over. :D
I don't know about in other areas, but if it is raining hard, and you still speed or break other traffic laws, the cops hate pulling you over. Most of the time if you aren't doing something ridiculous, they won't pull you over.
One time it was raining, cop was up front at an intersection. Perpendicular to him, a car just enters the intersection as it turns red. Cop didn't do anything as it was pouring rain.
FYI, in FL it is illegal to "flash" any of your front lights except your turn signals for turning and stopped vehicle only. I doubt most cops know that though. Also, in states where it is illegal to flash, you can tap your roof, but I think only bikers will get it.
An oncoming motorbikclist did this to me one time...
I let off, suspicious as to why he'd do that, not knowing what it meant, and soon got the KA hit... put two and two together. :)
Up north, illegal or not, we'll just flash our lights. We get pulled over we can say "oh, i saw a moose so i was warning other drivers to slow down and pay attn". In Florida you could say you saw a gator I suppose?!
Do you guys really warn other drivers? I just see other drivers as potential rabbits. No need to warn them. :D
Not if they are driving in front of me serving as a rabbit, but if there is a cop sitting in a hiding spot going to nab someone coming the other way (and they aren't in some riced out car or look to be driving recklessly) then I will warn them. Sometimes they thank you, I made a thread about that once and it didn't turn out too nice :p.
I like to flash headlights too but that seems to be going out of style, at least here in Maryland. Kind of like waving to people in your neighborhood... just doesn't happen anymore as people are more concerned about their own well being and not others I guess. Problem with flashing headlights is that people in front of you either get pissed off and slow down a bit or get out of the way and you aren't even pushing them.
Didn't know it was illegal to flash your headlights... I will keep that in mind. Fog lights may do the trick.
Flash-headlight for roller-skates, and to let the professional drivers know... I use professional equipment: A CB.
HOP ON THE CB FOLKS!!!
Yeah but with the V1 I can have a several mile alert, soooo many get impatient and pass me up just before we get to the LEO
I've seen a few bikes do this and a few people in cars, I might pat the roof time to time if the weather i good and I've got the windows down.
I flash the high beams as much as possible.
I don't believe in Karma but I do believe cooperative countermeasures. Flashing for speedtraps encourages participation. It's the closest thing to organized speeding you can get without radios and aliases.
However, I've been know to open the door for fat SUVs to run rabbit for me. Problem is they're always crappy rabbits. 100 then 90 then 100 then 80 then 100 again. I hate that.
well in new zealand we just flash our headlights on and off. i have also done it to a marked police car they didnt do anything. another thing you can do if its dark is turn your head lights from park lights to just your nornmal headlights but only if its safe to do so
I believe in the "Speed Trap Karma" rule. Last year while going through Alabama traveling a yellow truck went flying past me going into a construction zone and told my wife "Watch I bet he'll get pulled over", saw him pulled over at the end of the construction zone with a AL state trooper behind him. I laughed and made a little joke, later that day I got pulled over for speeding :(.
As for warning others, flash the lights, tap the brakes the usual.
Flashing lights over here means Stunting Ticket…Police have a tickets for everything and if they don’t it goes under the category of stunting.
Here in Greece we flash our lights at oncoming drivers.
Same thing I do when its daylight out. However the fact that I have running lights it is not as effective and the bulbs are so dim its hard to even tell if your brights are on. if you have a big truck who's headlights are higher up, I always seem to catch these people flashing their brights on the other side of the highway to warn us of cops.
Flash your lights at other drivers, but only if the cop can't see you as that's a great way to get a ticket here.
If I had a CB I'd use that also (it's on my to buy list...).
it seems no one in at least Northern California warns other drivers in anyway..I've tried flashing my brights, Not sure if any one got the picture though.
