Need protection against radar gun - FL
Hello all, new user..
I got one ticket 58 in a 50 6 wks or so ago with laser... fast forward to this a.m., I got another ticket 65 in a 50... The irony is it was in the same spot I got the last one... I had not gotten a ticket in 6+ years, now they are on a ticket splurge in this town...
What do you recommend to get me through that area on my daily commute? I was reading about the Escort Laser Shifter ZR3... I do NOT need a radar detector, as the citation indicates they used a laser gun...
I have read of a laser jammer, but surfed a bit and see that they are expensive and some cops claim it is illegal.
Price? It would be great if I can get something for under $300...
Any recommendations?
tks

Re: Need protection against radar gun - FL
first wat car do you drive and wat color? if u drive a small black car a zr3 could be do-able with veil...also i would highly recommend you look into a Radar detector since most police use radar as opposed to laser...i think its like for every 1-2 lasers there is 10 radar units

Re: Need protection against radar gun - FL
We need to know a few things. Most importantly what kind of vehicle your talking about and a picture of that vehicle.Secondly,do you not monitor your drving habits.Doing 65 in a 50 is kinda high without any warning devices. You say you only want laser protection, but i think you will really be hindering yourself. You need to really consider both. What happens if you get another ticket with radar instead of laser?

Re: Need protection against radar gun - FL
Where in FL are you FHP likes their KA a lot of local departments are starting to use laser but a detector is still a good buy if you are on a budget look at the whistler pro 78 rev c its a grerat detector for the price also for a small sedan the zr3 with veil will most likely yeild decent jamming results

Ford Mustang, 2004... no chrome, charcoal gray.... I drive the same roads all the time, and if they used laser on both my stops... plus my freind lives in Dade County (the next town over) and they user laser... so for now I am focusing on laser... I mean the specific road I take daily is patrolled by laser guns, so that's what I need for now...

I am in south Florida, miami / Ft lauderdale... FHP doesn't use laser?? Wow...
So are you saying I need 1. a radar detector and 2. a laser detector, ie escort lazer shifter z3???
EDIT... looking at the prior citation 2/17, it was 67 in a 50 , using STALKER LASER 79522. and the first ticket (SAME pd ) used a The TruSpeed LTI 20/20
I am wondering if that "few hundred feet" the laser detector warns me, if it will be enough to brake b4 he get me on target... If I am the only one up ahead, by the time my detecter picks up the laser's signal, that means it has reached my car and he got me?? Now I am confused..

fastgt has a zr3 on a mustang also here are so,me of the results, If you see laser more then get a ZR3 then asap get the radar detector the ZR3 will alert when you are beuing shot with laser,Also depends on the FHP officer some do use Laser others KA check out the South Florida therad in the regional info forum

Re: Need protection against radar gun - FL
FHP definitely uses laser. The two times I've driven into Florida were hallmarked by nice lazy laser shots across or from a rest area, particularly when on the turnpike.
Getting a laser jammer is probably well worth the investment and a decent radar detector on Ka band (i.e. Whistler Pro-78 at $120-150) would be wise too, but just as important is being able to recognize areas that would be prone to laser traps, pay close attention to your surroundings, etc.
The last trip back from Florida, when passing through Georgia, my dad was driving and I was trying to catch up on sleep from driving the whole night, but I ended up getting NO SLEEP... every 30 minutes I'd open my eyes, see a car slowing down for no good reason then I have to mutter "laser" 5 seconds before the 8500 X50 goes off LASER... :)

The 8500 is about $350... and it picks up laser... damn I am worried that they pick it up so late in the game, you hardly have time to react... seconds!!bam, you either slow down or you are gotten.
I guess it would be cheaper getting the 8500 vs a laser jammer and the whistler for example.. The Z3 shifter would do what then?

You are setting yourself up for failure with this mindset. Fairfax County in NOVA uses laser ALMOST all the time, but I still encounter radar from time to time and it's only going to take one more ticket like the ones you posted for you to lose your license for a little while. You must have a RD along with your jammer. Not to mention you need to slow down. Taking a bus, cabs or hitching a ride isn't going to be fun and it will cost you a hell of alot more than an RD and jammer.

Re: Need protection against radar gun - FL
^ lol jesus man, do some research! There is lots of info on these forums. Just start reading.
check out the guysoflidar site too. Also there is no "you either slow down.." part to it. Its only "you are gotten" when it comes to laser. (unless its scatter which is not something to depend on AT ALL)
Jammers are the only way to go.... btw make sure you install a on/off switch and turn it off once you slow down so they can get a reading. I also get a fealing you think these tools will make you invincible. Far from the truth. Especially since you want to ignore RD.

Sorry to hear about your situation. My suggestion is to read a lot here first. First off, having a radar detector is a false sense of security when it comes to preventing you from having a speeding ticket specially when you consider the budget you have set forth at $300. Even having the best radar detector and laser jammer is not 100% protection. To get close to where your budget is, I would recommend the V1. You can get a refurb around $350 with just an additional $50 on your budget. It has the best laser/radar detection and a good all around unit when it comes to constant on and instant on radar detection.
V1 with good defensive driving techniques and constant awareness is your best bet.

Oh don't get a $350 radar detector to detect laser -- any passive laser countermeasure does not provide good protection -- With my radar detectors only about 10 of the 30 or 40 times I've been hit by laser has it provided an advance warning. Most of the times, it's just a notification that I've been hit and he already has my speed. It's strongly recommended that you get a laser jammer and a cheap radar detector instead.

Re: Need protection against radar gun - FL
^^ I agree. Escort's ZR3, combined with a very light and almost invisible coat of Veil on the headlights and on the taillight corner cube reflectors, should prove to be very effective against laser. Then, to deal with the K and Ka band radar guns which police use in Florida, I suggest either a Bel V955 or a Whistler Pro78.

Re: Need protection against radar gun - FL
I just read both tickets and the SAME PD used two different laser guns on both occasions
STALKER LASER 79522.
and
TruSpeed LTI 20/20
Ok, so two differnet units ... what's it going to take?
I'll have to get a radar detecter as well... I have to do more reading, I figured one package detects both radar and laser...
This is scary stuff, I just saw this while reading on the truspeed "The TruSpeed offers speed accuracy of +/- 1 mph and a range of 2,000 feet." That will kill you in such a straight deserted road
-
Re: Need protection against radar gun - FL
ZR3 would be ok if it's a small car and you keep it below 10 over. $300 is not really a realistic budget for a good laser jammer, though. I would still recommend buying a Radar Detector, I have NEVER encountered laser on the highway in Florida and I've lived here for 9 years.
Save your money and buy a Blinder or a Laser Interceptor if you're worried about laser.

Yeah, 2000 ft is a pretty normally advertised range of a laser gun, and it's at that distance that laser is the most deadly to the unprotected -- you'd enver see what's coming.
Fortunately at that distance both a laser detector and a laser jammer would come in handy, as it is a slight challenge for them to lock you.
At point-blank range even a jammer won't do you much good -- in that case visually spotting the cop before he targets you can be your best defense.
But to reiterate, detecting laser is not a very good form of protection compared to jamming laser, and there is no all-in-one windshield mount package that does both. A decent radar detector that detects laser is relatively inexpensive (mid $100's gives you a good Bel Vector or Whistler unit), but jamming laser requires much more expensive equipment, and that's where not all are created equal:

As you can see, the zr4 did not perform superbly, particularly against the stalker, and the zr3 is supposedly only worse on that scale. However, supporters of the zr3/zr4 units will say this is enough real world protection, and combined with the right car and right complementary protections (Veil, plate blockers, etc) will give you good real world performance.

From what I've heard the ZR3 sucks against the Stalker and the Ultralyte and won't even jam the Truspeed period.

Re: Need protection against radar gun - FL
The cheapest combination I would go with is a laser mask LCM-1 for $200 and a whistler pro 78se for radar. Total you are looking at about $350. This of course is minimal protection and personally I don't know how the laser mask does against the truspeed maybe someone else knows.

Yep, the ZR3 + Veil can handle the Ultralyte pretty well, but the ZR3 and the Stalker don't mix. You need at a minimum, the Blinder M25 + Veil or better yet, an LI to defend yourself against the Stalker.

Re: Need protection against radar gun - FL
With the ZR3, you gotta have Veil to go up against the Stalker. Alternatively, if you have factory HID headlights, then always drive with them on. Recently at the Atlanta Jammerfest we discovered that HID lights help considerably whereas halogen headlights make no difference at all.

Finally, some proof that headlights do make a difference when it comes to jamming. Actually on the halogen lights MEM, this depends on the design of the headlight. My preliminary tests showed that high/low beams with H4 bulbs does not do well compared to an H5 or H6 bulbs with smaller rounded high beam design. My guess is that, the H4 headlights tend to project the beam in a scattered manner and the smaller rounded design seems to project the beam in a more focussed way. Please use this data as a grain of salt. It needs more testing in my opinion since I only used the stalker to test it a few times.
-
Re: Need protection against radar gun - FL
We didn't do extensive testing of HID versus halogen. Yet the two vehicles with HID lights had half the PT distance with the HID lights turned on. And two very different vehicles with halogen lights (mine included) showed no difference with the halogen lights turned on. Yeah, this is far from conclusive. The Atlanta group plans to do more thorough testing since this last test for HID lights was a "spur of the moment" after the conclusion of the main tests. Yet the results were enough to get everyone's attention.

Wasn't there a gun that the ZR3 couldn't jam but the ZR4 could? I guess I just got confused.

Yes. The gun is the Laser Atlanta when this gun is operated in Stealth Mode. That is the only one. But, as rsatmans will tell you, LA Stealth Mode really sucks. Yep, even laser gun manufacturers occasionally have advertising hyperbole which rivals Cobra.

It LA is anything like Cobra then Laser Atlanta must be a 2 band laser gun...stealth mode and normal mode. :D
