Beltronics STi Driver
So I just purchased an STi Driver on eBay. It should be in the mail tomorrow, and I can't wait to play with it. It's my first radar detector, and I may be driving in a state where radar detectors aren't allowed.
I ordered a visor clip as well from eBay as I think this is the most stealthy way to install it.
Any suggestions?

Re: Beltronics STi Driver
Post a pic of the upper windshield area inside your car. If you can't post pics yet, at least post a link to one which you upload to Photobucket or another hosting service. You also may still be limited on posting links, so throw in a couple of spaces in the URL for the photo.

Re: Beltronics STi Driver
I've got my STi on my visor in a CD holder thingie. It's one of those things for holding a bunch of CDs in slots. It has a big pocket in the middle, so the I installed the holder such that the pocket opening is facing forward. Then I stuck the detector in the pocket, so that the antenna end it pointed out the window. It's very stealthy. Also, don't forget to turn on dark mode, and hardwire to so that the cord is well hidden.

Re: Beltronics STi Driver
As of right now, it's sandwiched between the ceiling of the car and the visor.
My first trip through town to Lowes for install supplies, on the way home I picked up K band of increasing intensity (C/O) and it was a local LEO K band CO facing oncoming traffic.
My first confirmed hit.
Wired the direct wire kit through the column and under the dash to a custom switch panel I made for all of my neon lighting and other electronics.(pictures coming)
The direct wire control is low and to the right of the steering column (I'll take pictures tomorrow).
The external speaker is sturdy and mounted on the side of my PC78Elite.
VERY loud with the volume on the STi maxed out.
My only problem, is that the way it's mounted, it's:
1 - not level
2 - looking through the strip of tint on the top of the windshield
I will take pictures and you will understand why I cannot use the visor clip. (It's visible from the outside from the height of a patrol car).

Re: Beltronics STi Driver
By the way, thanks a million MEM-TEK for a great item.
Positive feedback is on its way.

I think I can.
I believe links and images both come in at 15 posts.:)
The photos will come tomorrow, or tonight if I feel ambitious.

pretty good idea but cops seem to love tinted windows , they all want to see what youre hiding.

For over 2 years with this package and no issues whatsoever but to avoid any unnecessary "breakdown" anytime one of them is right behind me or beside me, for instance at a traffic light, I just open the driver's window (in the middle of the freaking winter as well, or raining) so they can see anything they want to, they are interested in wearing the seat belt, nothing in the windshield in my area, and pretty soon illegal talking on a handheld cell phone, and that's it, no other issues with limo tint!

I understand completely, but when you say "nothing in the windshield in my area", does this mean you have your RD visor mounted?

I'll show you how I have it, sandwiched between the ceiling and the visor, and why i cannot visor mount. :)

Re: Beltronics STi Driver
Here is what the roof-line looks like from the outside with the visors closed and flush against the ceiling of the car:

Re: Beltronics STi Driver
I've driven around town with the detector sandwiched between the ceiling of the car and the visor twice and passed a speed trap once, with no problems and was alerted properly.
This is what it looks like from the inside:

Re: Beltronics STi Driver
You will notice I put a pack of cigarettes in the same place as the RD on the passenger visor so everything is even from the inside and outside.
You should notice a small bulge near the top of the windshield, from the outside with my sandwich technique.

Re: Beltronics STi Driver
And finally, the visor clip:http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/q.../Visorclip.jpg
and from the outside:
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/q...evisorclip.jpg
I think it's pretty clear that there's a black square hanging from the visor, visible from the outside.

Re: Beltronics STi Driver
Also, the direct wire control, http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/q...ectWireKit.jpg
and the CB: Uniden PC78Elite, custom built (I know it's not the prettiest thing) switch panel, and newly added Bel external speaker.http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/q...andspeaker.jpg

Re: Beltronics STi Driver
Note: the external speaker audio cable has been concealed and wired successfully through the pillar and up to the visor, but the power wire has not yet been connected.

Don't worry, that's the way to go, visor clip between the roof and the visor, the STI on the lower side of the visor, a "something" btwn the roof and the visor to make it level with the ground, a small book, a small map or more, etc., but be sure is not gonna start sliding off and hit you in the head when you hit the gas, also cover the STI with an ordinary CD holder you find it at any Walmart store, then put some everything in the holder, paper notes, anything that makes it casual, also get a pen in the holder, make yourself a hardworking self-employed contractor, with common-sense and... smaller pictures LOL
That's all I can tell you about my stealth install:

Re: Beltronics STi Driver
One of those neat visor pouches might be just the thing for Mgiara. Heck, he could even sandwich the STi between one of those CD visor holsters and the visor. Nice CB -- essentially its a slightly better version of the Cobra 29. I just gotta know what that left red switch with the safety cover is for.

Thanks for the advice Chris.
What exactly do you mean by "the STI on the lower side of the visor". You mean where the bulge is?

I've been thinking a lot about buying one of those MEM-TEK. The CB is disconnected.
I know.
I'm going to set it back up again as soon as I but a new Wilson antenna.
I don't have any antennas worth hooking up. Just a POS RadioShack piece of junk.
"I just gotta know what that left red switch with the safety cover is for.":haha:
It's for the rocket boosters. :crazy_pilot:
Just kidding.
It is the remote turn on for my woofers in the trunk.
2000 Watts = have to turn them off when the po-po's get too close. Not exactly the most stealthy thing to have in a rally car to be, I know, but what can I say. I love bass.
And I know, having a safety cover over that switch is virtually pointless; less the eye appeal .

Re: Beltronics STi Driver
Was that too many smileys for one post?
-
Re: Beltronics STi Driver
All suggestions are good, but I could just save up a little more and sell the STi, and buy an STi-R.
I think ultimately that's the absolute best solution for my car.

I misspoken, obviously that's just one way you can mount any RD on the visor, the same way anybody has already done it, of course the visor is not level to the ground, that's how all cars are built, mine is on the visor but closer to the RVM edge of the visor and obviously professionally hardwired thru the roofliner... and always leave it in the tech mode, I guess that's what you call when you get the radar frequency, why very important? 1) you learn the radar guns (for laser you will see LASER on the display) used in your area and anywhere you drive your car 2) anytime you get a radar alert you read the freq, usually if it's a false (banks, stores, auto dealers, etc.) it lasts 1-3 secs but if it's a real one it will last for a long time (for instance a LEO driving half a mile behind you, you cannot see him but the very same freq for 2-5 min or even longer and it's obvious that he's somewhere behind you) so you start driving accordingly... the more you drive with your RD the better you will understand the equipment your local police is using and pretty soon no more secrets for you... about 150,000 miles driving with RDs so I think I gathered some experience in this amazing "business"... built just for REBELS:);)
Drive safely!
Chris
