License plate cover idea...
Hi, I have thought of making my own flip-a-switch that would cover about 50% of the back license plate. Why not take an old cd-player from an old computer, flip it on it's side and insert it into the back bumper right next to the plate.
I have a maxima and it would fit perfectly inside the bumper, it would cover the last 3 out of the 6 numbers on the plate. I don't have a font plate. I doubt that they would try all the thousands of combinations.
I still have to experiment a bit further on expanding the eject button to the front via a switch and also how to power the thing...
What do you guys think..doable?
Re: License plate cover idea...
If you get it to work great. You got a ghetto plate hider. I don't think they can do much with only 3 numbers.
Re: License plate cover idea...
Hah! Definitely do-able. Maybe use two for covering the whole plate, one coming from each side.
Please do this, it would be awesome to see.
Re: License plate cover idea...
+1 for innovation.
Now, NEC or Lite-On? :D
Re: License plate cover idea...
What's the purpose? Busting toll boths?
Re: License plate cover idea...
The same purpose on why you have an RD.
Not for tolls but for photo radar that is now all over the city.
Re: License plate cover idea...
next thing i know i have unlimited kill swithes......lol.....this thus sounds like a good idea.....

It's not even close to the same purpose. An RD warns you of something. A plate hider warns you of nothing. It is an active countermeasure that allows you to intentionally skirt the law. Not saying that's wrong or anything. Just saying that it's not the same thing.
I always forget about photo radar, because I am never anyplace where it exists, so I hadn't thought about that. That said, if you start doing that habitually, like some of the idiots that go jamming-to-gun habitually, or busting toll boths habitually, they will make it their mission to find you and make you very, very sorry. It's just not a smart idea.

Hum ....with computers : make / model / color ....
they can find you very fast
for them it is a challenge ....hide all the plate or nothing ....
I read of another way : high power infrared leds flooding the plate
but only efficient at night when they use infrared flash. ...even so
I have doubts cause of the large difference in reflectivity
between the caracters versus highly reflective background
since photoshop can do marvels.
Re: License plate cover idea...
I was always told that if I had to record a plate number for any reason that I only need the first three digits or letters and they could find it... dont know how true it is, but that was directly from an officer when I was younger.

My neighbors got tee-peed. They only got the first three digits and the leo's said they couldn't do anything.
Re: License plate cover idea...
This is the best use I've seen for busted CD drives since the cupholder story!
Maybe the drive could be modified to lower a tray that covers the entire plate. Or maybe drops a fake plate over the real one (think James Bond). :)
If you could make it automatic, where it hides the plate while the car is moving above a certain speed, even better. How about rigging the plate so it's hinged on top, and rig some kind of air deflector so that the plate pivots "up" when the car is moving from the air flow.

What about the products by ontrack like the toll-free protector, overhead photo protector, etc.? I consider them on the same idea.

Pretty much.
