LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
Hi,
After learning quite a bit from this site, I bought a dual LI for front, along with a 9500ci.
I did the install myself with help of a few friends. Along with the 9500ci and the LI, I also installed a backup camera, a navigation bypass switch, and an audio/video harness. The whole thing included two sensors on the back, three on the front, as well as three panels, three switches, three cpu boxes, the radar GPS, one speaker and one LED all installed inside.
Here are the photos of the final result:

It was about 20 hours of work to get everything installed. None of us had any experience on car installs before, but we took our time, had lots of fun, and I am pretty happy with the result.

Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
The LI heas look like they are not pointing straight down the road, they shouldn't be angled out to the sides.
Also the best performance is then the bubbles are closer to the head lights.
Where are your front 9500ci shifter heads mounted?
Personally if I were you I would move the RD's display closer to the gauge cluster so you can see it with out diverting for eye too much from the road

Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
Incredibly nice job! I love how the AV plugs are tucked away like that.
I would agree with cVr's suggestions. It looks like the LI heads are following the angle of the grille, and that may well degrade your overall performance significantly. And yes, the bubbles should be out, towards the headlights.
I think you'll agree after a little use that the RD display would be a lot better off in your normal field of view too. But again, that is a great job of installation! Each time is a learning experience, and it gets more fun every time!

Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
Excellent job overall, I'd say flip the heads and make them with the bubbles out...

X2 Get a yard stick and see if the heads are aligned properly.

Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
Thanks for the great comments.
I wasn't sure which side the bubbles are supposed to be at. That's an easy fix; so is adjusting the orientation to make them point straight ahead. I'll do that before taking it for testing.
As for the RD display, it does require moving my eyes from the road, but it is within line of sight. I will just experience with it a little bit to see how it feels, but so far the speaker has been pretty informative for the immediate-alert type messages. If I feel like I am distracted from the road looking at the display often enough, I'll move it closer to other gauges.
In previous photos I had not included a picture of the radar speaker installation. I have attached two images for it. It is installed under my parking-brake, out of sight but easy to hear.

WOW! You have got to be kidding me! How in the heck did you even think of that? That's some real outside-the-box thinking there! Or should I say, inside-the-console?
Excellent work! This should inspire all those people who think they can't figure this stuff out!

^ You wouldn't believe the amount of stuff I've got crammed under there, in that very position (including my LPP's pizos). :p

gtrrr, that's *SUPER* impressive for first-time DIYers. I really haven't seen any first-timer installs that are that clean and well-thought-out! :)
And I'm totally jealous re: your vehicle. :D
Regarding the "bubbles," conventional thinking is that the receivers closer to the headlamps should be better/best, but without direct testing, on a vehicle as wide as yours, when combined with the center-mass point-weakness of the front plate, I'd say that's something that may or may not prove to be the case. Ivan (interceptor) - the man behind the LI - is not unknown for occasionally recommending an unconventional "bubbles in" formation, on specific vehicles/setups.
Regardless, it does seem that your current placement would bias too much receptive capability towards covering center-mass, and perhaps not enough to cover the outer aspects of the headlamps as well as the lower body panels and rearview mirrors. Without testing, I'd go with the other's recommendation, and turn the bubbles "out" for the time being, and seek to optimize, if-possible, at a later date, to see if the unconventional setup of "bubbles-in" would work better.

I agree, but look at his headlights and how far out are... I'd say get your setup tested and then adjust it accordingly...

^ Yep, and that's why I'd added what I did, of that last paragraph.
Without live testing, we just don't know.....

A big +1 on that, bruddah! :)

shouldnt the bubbles be turned out in the front?

Thanks :) It took some time, but the time really flied and I missed a few meals without even noticing! That's how much fun it was!

Thanks for all the advice... I'll be taking it for a test in the next couple of weeks. I'll keep you posted with the results.

Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
After flipping the jammers (see picture) and fixing the horizontal alignment issue that was pointed out to me here, I finally got the opportunity to test the system.
We did two tests using a Stalker; on the first try the gun was able to pick up the speed at 150ft, and the second one was a JTG.
The concerns about the horizontal alignment are mainly rectified, but I am not 100% satisfied with my vertical alignment. That's mostly due to the car grill's angle. But I am fairly happy with the results from this test, so I don't think I would need to tweak it any more.
What do you think?
-
Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
The install looks nice. No more tweaking required. I would do a couple more tests against different laser guns such as the Ultralyte and PL3.
-
Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
^ I'm inclined to agree.
150-ft. is certainly "effective JTG," and is almost "true-JTG" under normal, real-world encounter conditions.
During rigorous testing, even something small and otherwise unpredictable could have resulted in that PT.
Like the good brother said above, test with a few more guns if you can - on a few different occasions. Let's see if this is a true systemic weakness...and even if so, and even if, furthermore, "uncorrectable," at least you'll know that that's your absolute performance end-point.
Consistency-in-protection is really all that can be asked for. :)
-
Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
Great, thanks for the comments.
We were going to test it with an Ultralyte as well, but it was broken! Tough luck :)

Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
awesome install for first timers.

Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
You have an awesome car and the ultimate setup, great job.

Good question.
Are the LI heads similar to the ZR4s in their construction, i.e. should the circuit board side always be placed on the bottom because it blocks part of the light output?
I'm sure the answer is out there in the forum somewhere, but I'm too lazy to search for it right now. :D

Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
Great car, and I should know!
Beat you to the install though....
MY2009 NIssan GTR R35 quad head install
My setup has been tested against a PLII, Ultralyte 100pps nd the new Unipar SL700.
All JTG/JFG :)
Have you managed to get the LI to mute the audio during alert?

Great! given how similar our front installs look like, that gives me a bit more confidence about mine too since I didn't get to test it on anything but the Stalker.
As for the audio mute, no I didn't do it. But I probably could have, if I really wanted. I took apart most of the radio system and got access to many wires including ones for the speed sensing system (the signal that disables the computer UI when the car is in motion). I think the wire for muting the stereo should be somewhere among those dozens of wires I took apart for my camera install and nav-bypass.

Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
Yep, had all that gubbins out too!
I have pdfs of the USDM GTR (no EDM versions out in the wild yet it would seem) but there is very little info on the AV wiring.
I had a good look over it and found nothing.
I may end up using a relay to turn off the BOSE amp on alert.
Just a shame the weather's gone plop this week.
BTW I can heartily recommend a y-pipe and Cobb Accessport as your next mods!
-
Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
Accessport seems really cool. How much does it cost?
What's your experience with it?
And if you use it to reset the settings to default and take it off, would Nissan be able figure out you've used one to void your warranty?

I'm coming from this via Subarus - which, as you two may know, is one of Cobb's "bread and butter" markets. :)
The AccessPORT, even in its latest iteration, will still leave a trace of its presence on the ECU, should the dealer/service-personnel *really* pursue looking into the ECU's parameters.
The latest AccessPORT can literally rip the map that's on the specific ECU of your vehicle right off, as a true ROM image, so that its "restoration" at a later date would mean that there's virtually no trace...but it will still leave critical checksums as a breadcrumb.
Although I cannot vouch for this being the case with the Nissan ECU, I can only imagine that it is....
-
Re: LI and 9500ci on Nissan GTR
As ever, brother Tsi+WRX speaks a lot of sense.
The Accessport (AP) will download and then restore your factory original ECU ROM at service time.
However, the boffins at Nissan have enabled the GTR to keep a track of the number of flashes the ECU has had (amongst some other data for monitoring aftermarket add-ons) and as such, an AP will show up should they look for it.
My HPC has no issue with the AP as yet, but if I had a major warranty issue, who knows.
The y-pipe adds a cracking throaty sound to the GTR for very little money as is, IMHO, an absolute must for any GTR.
Some of the GTR crowd in the UK have taken the AP to another level with some clever programming so there is much more to come form this little device.
Dyno numbers for my GTR with a y-pipe and AP jumped from 477 bhp to 547 bhp.
I'm based in the UK so my AP cost would be different to a US sourced one.
And as for warranty...
You guys in the US have a very important piece of protection. Nissan would have to prove your mod did the damage being claimed for in order to deny that warranty claim.
If you are in any doubts, head over to NAGTROC, there's plenty of chatter about APs and more.
Enjoy the GTR, I love mine!
