Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
Just another 35.5 Ka band police radar detection. Detection distance was just a bit over 1.5 mile.

I wanted to test 35.5 Ka forward facing detection. So, I turned into a parking lot about 3/4 mile past where the patrol car was and headed back toward it .

Really, why would anyone want detection better than your video! Nice Video. Do you think the V1 would pick it up sooner? At that distance, does it Matter?

I think my Pro 78se is sufficient enough for me most of the time. I really don't care for too much more radar sensitivity than what I'm seeing with the Pro 78se.
I still want a V1, because I feel the need to see it perform for myself since so many people have said how great it is. I think I want a V1 mostly for it's features like the Radar Locator, Rear Antenna and the Bogey Counter. But the display on a V1 seem so outdated and I don't think I can go without RSID.

I know what you mean. I run my 9500ix with my V1 just for spec. Otherwise I wouldn't risk it.

Do you notice any interference running both together? I wonder if there will be any interference issues if I get a V1 and run it along side my Pro 78se? I should ask Freebird, since he has both.

No, but I still wouldn't recommend it until you test/observe it. Although the Pro 78s are pretty stealthy units, they do still leak some.

Interferance is easy to spot. One will be silent on an alert until almost 200 feet from the leo and when it alerts it will be like instant on. I have runs alot of units and had no interferance issues, but running a Whistler in my and DJ's test the Whistler interfered with the CI to a point on 35.5 the CI was silent until almost 100 feet from the radar gun. I would try them together and see what you observe. Its easy to spot interferance IMO. The V1 will give you more range, but in your tereign
I do not feel you need it. People with V1's back east dream of performance you are getting with you 78Se.

Well, in that case, I've noticed no interference between the 9500ix and the V1. In fact, my results running the two together are pretty characteristic of what you might expect.
I run them as far apart as I comfortably can.

no 2 radar detectors even same model and brand will emit the same emissions. If they are going to interfere, one will be emitting ka 34.7, 33.8 or 35.5. Not on the exact freq, but if it is leaking the other detector will pick it up, filter it and ignore other alerts close to that frequency. There is no way to tell if one will interfere with the other without testing them for some time together, to determine if one shows a signifigant loss in performance IMO.

I also noticed when I hold the 9500ix right next to the V1, it falses on X.

Going into programming mode on my old V1 made my STI alert to 35.5. Only in programming mode could I find and interferance.

Thanks for the info. I don't want more range, but I do want those arrows. I can't tell you how many times I wished I had arrows to tell me where to look for the leos. My eyes often feels like they are ready to pop out because I would look in my RVM, to the sides and everywhere when I get a alert.

With Ka guard off my V1 falses Ka to my 9500ix when they are antenna to antenna. My 9500ix never made a pep. With Ka guard on the V1 is also quiet.

Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
Very nice videos and range ! Your videos just keep getting better :) I can tell the SE platform is very noticeable on Ka 35.5 forward facing compared to my Pro 78. Keep it up Mike. I have half of the cost of a Pro 78 SE saved and will be able to purchase one within a month or so. Money is tight since my fiance hasn't got a job yet since she has been out of school. As for the V1 it has arrows but no Ka id. I would rather have the ID instead of arrows. The arrows take all the fun out of the cat and mouse game.
-
Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
Why not just run two Whistlers: One on the front windshield, one on the rear. Depending which RD alerts first, it should give you a pretty good idea of where the source is.

Many people have talked about how chatty V1 is, so I might not like that at all. I still have the K band turned off, so my Pro 78se is super quiet most of the time.
How is the economy in Texas? Are jobs hard to find there? I know lots of people have lost their jobs around here and Utah is supposably better off than most other states.
-
Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
I heard FT worth and Dallas are ok on jobs. The V1 with 30 second mute and the control knob to make the k-band alerts lower volume is nice. I ran mine in little l mode with rear mute, 30 second mute at any strenth, and this works well.

Maybe Michael B. can design small remote antennas that you can buy and add to the main unit. Sell them as "add a antenna kit" for the rear or add a couple more antennas for the sides. Have a display like how some car have for showing which doors are ajar. Didn't Cobra get around the patent with the plug-in GPS module?
-
Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
BTW, the settings I used today on my Pro 78se were: X-OFF, K-OFF, Ka-MaxID, LSR-LSID, SR-OFF, POP-OFF and Filter 1.
-
Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
economy here is fair ! The V1 is very sensitive but my experience with one was like a pet parrot that wouldn't quiet down in heavily populated city's. My x50 was just as bad.

I'd bet money that you are suppressing detection on one or both of your RDs. The V1 is obviously detecting some Ka band from your 9500ix, as you noticed with Ka guard turned off. This raises the noise floor, which is almost assuredly hindering detection on your V1.

For long-range I/O detection. If every LEO used C/O radar all the time, almost any cheapy RD will be good enough.

Hmm, a expansive RD = a good RD. A cheapy RD = a bad RD. I simply can't agree to that.
I heard your arguments before about I/O at long range. So, are you saying that my Pro 78se can't detect a I/O radar, even when it can detect a C/O radar at 3+ miles? You've seen my 3+ miles of 35.5Ka detection on video before. Here it is, in case you don't remember:
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnKSnKNVu4U]YouTube - Whistler Pro 78se 35.5Ka 7/31/2009[/ame]
Oh, I guess that was too easy of a condition for any detector. Yeah, wait a while and I might just get a long range I/O detection on video. Long range I/O detections are hard to proof, since a RD could pick up a false signal and then see a cop later on a long ways off. I've seen videos like that (I don't care for speculations).
Whistler Pro 78se is not perfect nor expansive, but I guess it works just fine for me in what you would call an "easy for any cheapy detector environment".
-
Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
Since we are talking about interference. During my testing of the 9960G(Which right now I'm still having to use because the gf used the 695 and fell in love with it.) The Whistler 695 stayed silent while my Cobra alerted. I'm very sure that the 695 would leak less than the 9960G. Does anyone have any sort of explanation for this?
-
Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
The cobra may leak on a different frequency that the whistler ignores, maybe around 11ghz??

You took my comment personal. It wasn't meant as a shot at the Pro78SE at all. I was just answering the question in general. If all someone is up against is C/O radar, then any cheapy RD will do. I wasn't referring to the Pro78SE when I made that statement. I was thinking of like a $50 Cobra or something. My answer was more explaining that the more sensitivity a RD has, the longer distance it will be able to pick up an I/O shot.

I guess I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.
I can definitely see the advantage of more sensitivity, but it's a balance. I want a V1, but fear it's higher sensitivity would come at a cost of more noise. I want a 9500ix, but fear that it won't alert to a Q/T in close or long range. For me it's all about finding that good balance of quietness, performance, features and cost.

I've seen enough of your videos to completely agree with you that the Pro78SE is more than good enough for your area. I just didn't see those same results here in SoCal. I personally can't run the Whistlers in filter or filter1 here in SoCal, because the Ka falses are just unbearable. I'm starting to think there is a significant performance gap between filter and filter2 on these Whistlers. We saw something(non-Whistler related) at GoL that makes me think this.
-
Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
Testing against that fixed 34.7 speed trailer (When I first got the 78Se) I tried all 3 filter modes and made several passes. I was unable to find any difference in performance between any of the 3 filter modes.

I'm puzzled and troubled by those erratic Ka false alerts on my Pro 78se. I don't see them often, but that's the one area where Whistler needs to work on. I guess the Whistlers are ultra sensitive to something that it shouldn't be. My guess is that it's reacting to some sort of communication signals. I hope Michael B. is out there with his high tech instruments trying to find the source of the problem.

Filter 2 does not eliminate those erratic Ka9 false alerts nor does using KaRSID instead of KaMaxID. I still can't tell if performance degrades when I use Filter 2. I've gotten great detections while using Filter 2.

There may be something with your vehicle's electrical system thats setting off the Ka9 bursts.
-
Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
The ka 9 falses appear to happen to me in heavy traffic more than any other time. I agree ka norm, rsid and kamax id settings have no affect on getting rid of these. I also get some k9 falses also in heavy traffic, lasting a few seconds.
I do have the least amount of these on filter 2 mode.

I had thought that my Pro 78se has a built in "reckless driving" alert feature. There have been a few times where I would get a burst of Ka9 alerts when I got aggressive in my car. Maybe a surge of electrical current triggered something. I have very little knowledge in electrical engineering, so I don't know if that's even possible.
TRun, are you seeing those Ka9 alerts on your 690se?
-
Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
In Filter2 mode I never see any Ka9 bursts. Right now I'm running in Filter trying to see how many falses I can get, so far there is the rather rare Ka9 but I've found the source to be a leaky RD 99% of the time. I'm hitting the road tonight so I hope to catch some action on film.
