Long Island, NY Radar experiences.

I travel about 50 miles on the 495 Long Island Expressway daily. There are quite a bit on State Troopers either hiding on ramps, in the center median, or in the bushes.

I read the thread regarding what is being used in the region, however, I wanted to know if anyone here actually successfully detected the troopers with their radar/laser detectors.

I rarely detect them, it seems like they just sit there watching traffic. However, I know this is not the case as they are out there to catch speeders.

Last night for the very first time I was POP'ed on the LIE! I had a feeling maybe POP was being used in this region!? The only law enforcement I noticed right before being POP'ed was an under cover Crown Vic that crossed me and was about 7 car lengths ahead.

You didn't get POP'ed and the NYST's can NOT monitor traffic on the LIE. LIE can only be watched by the Suffolk and Nassau County Police and the Suffolk county Sheriff. Turn off POP! POP is poop, and useless

Several times I have seen under cover pull people over on the LIE. I also see at least one car pulled over on a 50 mile commute, not sure if for speeding or riding the HOV. But I highly doubt they will let anyone slide going 90 mph. I have been pulled over twice for speeding on the LIE for going 75. I have been driving on the LIE for 10 years now.

hmm glad I found this thread, I'm having a hard time deciding what to get, either the Passport Escort 8500 x50, 9500i or 9500ix, or Beltronics RX 65. What's the best for our area?

I live in Queens, NYC, and normally drive in Queens/Brooklyn/Long Island (near Roosevelt Field Mall)

I already tried the 9500ix; I returned it for the Redline. If you are doing mostly highway driving, the redline is the way to go. If you care about redlight cameras then the 9500ix would be the way to go.

how was the 9500ix? did you like it? did it detect well?

how come you replaced it with the redline?

Been driving 8 years on the LIE with always cruising above 80 - 90 no problems. Guess I always travel at the right time

I didn't want to be rude, but everyone seems really annoyed by your posts. They really make you look foolish when you say something like "I drive 90 mph+ on the LIE everytime". Lol, what a fool to think anyone would believe you.

Anyways, can't ever argue with a fool...good luck speeding 90 mph+ and risking everyone elses life on the road for being THAT guy.

The 9500ix was a good detector, but I didn't like it much on the sensetivity side. I needed something more sensetive for earlier detection.

There isn't too many in Long Island. However, I do know there are a few in Queens and Manhattan. I just felt this option to be unnecessary for me since I do mostly highway driving in the East Coast.

So far I really like the Redline Detector.

You may get a good bit of false alarms. If your main concern is false alarms, the 9500ix is the perfect choice. If you are more concerned about sensetivity, get the Redline.

Haha this is funny, although rob sounds like a jackass, I cannot say he is lying when he says he does 90 with no problem. He's just trying to help you out with info you asked for. Rob was actually the one who said he deserved a ticket when going 92mph on another thread so he's just speaking what he believes is right. ****, I drive 90+ with no problem down here in Murderland. If you were doing 75 in the fast lane and I came up on your ass you better move the hell over, it's just common courtesy. I have never driven to NY so I can't give you any details on it :D. Good luck with it tho man, sure you can get some good info on here.

I think you should get a laser jammer. Forget the 9500ix. Most LEO are using laser.

lol just another question anyone have a valentine one? how good is it? a lot better than the 8500 x50, and the 9500ix?

also another question about the V1, 8500 x50, or the 9500i/ix will any of these actually detect laser? i know once you have been hit with laser its too late, but what about if you were approaching a hill and the cop was shooting laser at people 500 yards in front of you?! will any of those detectors go off if they notice that laser is being shot at a car 500 yards ahead of you, by a cop.

Like I've told you in the PM, most are using laser. On the cross island, I think the LEO uses k/KA. I know on the Clearview, sometimes he uses k/ka band. 90% of the time though, its laser

Has anyone here visually seen what equipment the Suffolk Sheriff Dept is using on the 495 Expressway? My redline detector works great. However, not ONCE have I been able to pick up a signal from ANY of the Sheriffs, yet they are catching people for speeding!

Solidjake, thanks for the great info. My detector works fine with the NYPD. It's the Sheriff's I can't detect anything from. I have even seen them hide off the road perpendicular to the highway.

I have the Redline; I hope it is just as good as the V1...

I would have k band turned on while in NY because you never know. In different areas, k band is used.

Today for the first time I detected K-band by the Suffolk Sherrif. He was on the other side of the highway LIE East bound, about 5 lanes across. As I was nearing his vechile (visual sight) the detector beeped lightly, and then full blast all of a sudden. The detector went silent all of a sudden and I noticed him take off after a speeding vechile.

I guess I didn't pick him up sooner because either he didn't have his Radar gun in use...or due to his location (5 lanes acorss with a concrete barrier in the middle).

It wouldn't surprise me if you found an old k band radar gun being used on LI.

Also, if you are seeing the leo's sitting perpendicular to the road, they are using laser or handheld radar. No doubt about it.
