VINTAGE radar detector question
just had a quick question....i recently bought a used car and was cleaning it today and found what one guy says looks like a "vintage" radar detector. it was stashed under the seat...the make and model is MAXON RD-25...all's i know is that its old. i cant find ANY information about it and was wondering if anyone here knows anything about it. please let me know. thanks!
Re: VINTAGE radar detector question
X and K band only I think. Have you tried powering it up?
Re: VINTAGE radar detector question
yeah i plugged it in and it works just fine....seems to be picking up building security or something though, i dont know about cops.
Re: VINTAGE radar detector question
Automatic door openers and some security systems are major false source. I wouldn't trust that RD to protect me these days since most police departments have Ka and Laser guns now

Vintage Radar Detectors
1980s & 1990s Era Radar Detectors
X and K Band Superheterodyne Radar Detectors
Yeah, it's older then a grandpa's balls. Useless but still a neat find. Post pics of the RD.

Re: VINTAGE radar detector question
I don't know about that one, but years ago I tried a RD. I can't recall which/what it was, but I got it one day and I gave up the next day. It totally wouldn't shut up - so annoying, that I had gone years without. Recently I got back into trying - ah, so much better with today's technology.
I don't know why but I want to say back then that it was a Uniden RD, but I'm not to sure since it's been some time.
I just like what's available today for actual use.

Re: VINTAGE radar detector question
It's not going to protect you these days, but I love collecting classic radar detectors. That one is a good find. I recently obtained a Whistler Spectrum 2 SE from my Dad.
Re: VINTAGE radar detector question
You kidding me? I still have my passport 5000! LOL
i'll put up some pics soon. I don't have it in the car though..but it would be cool to put it in there just for kicks
Re: VINTAGE radar detector question
I picked up that same RD on an auction site for $3! Used it as a trade-in RD for Bel's $80 GX65 trade-in program. :D
Re: VINTAGE radar detector question
This RD served me for 20+ years. and countless tickets. I don't see a model number on it. Do you supose Belscort would give me money for this on a trade in?
Re: VINTAGE radar detector question
They take any detector, working or not. :)
Re: VINTAGE radar detector question
The Maxon is an oldie, alright. Mine was purchased new and saved my bacon for years. But when Ka and laser came onto the scene, I could no longer trust this faithful companion to be able to protect as completely. I'd recommend to trade it or toss it, as that old guy is blind to Ka, laser and all forms of photo enforcement.
Re: VINTAGE radar detector question
The Maxon RD-25 was a product for the most part distributed by Drew Allan Kaplan, a/k/a "DAK" - Back in its day - late 1980's - it was a Good to Very Good Detector available for well UNDER $100. Had one then, saved me tickets several times. I live in the semi-fictional "State" of NJ - for what tickets, "surcharges", and Insurance increases would have cost, it paid for itself Very Quickly! -DrShalit-

Re: VINTAGE radar detector question
I still have my old passport 4500. It still works. Picked up a LEO from about 1-1.5 miles on a straight road.
I doubt I would trust it on a trip though, but it was fun driving around seeing what it "detected" compared to what my other RD's pick up on the same roads.

I put my old Passport 5000 up against my 8500 (non x50) on X and K band, and believe it or not, they were very similar in range. The two worst problems with the 5000 was that the Ka band range is a joke, and the power connection eventually breaks inside the unit.
