Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
What ticks me off the most is the stupid legal system in CA, heck, there are tons of CA laws that are stupid. Being a Class A license holder, i cant go to traffic school, my fines double, and i get 2 points instead of 1... regardless if i drive my personal vehicle or Class A vehicle, which makes it more dumb, because i always go 55mpg on a truck in CA.
Few months ago i was speeding a little by my house, trying to get my wife home so she wont be late to work, got pulled over by a bike cop, tried to fight it, didnt work.
Few weeks ago, was turning right on an intersection, was trying to beat redlight, got cought at .90 seconds. If i knew about the redlight camera i would have probably stopped. Fought this tickett in court, cop showed up, i lost.. will try to appeal.
My point is, i cant go to traffic school, my insurance goes up higher, i have to pay more, now i have to drive like a grama for like 3 years, if i see a cop i better hide just in case!!
Im new to radars and i honestly have no clue which model to start researching, one of my friends has a 9500ix and one has V1 and they both say they are the best, everyone that owns something say it will be the best of course.
i want to get the best, im willing to invest in it, i want the most protection possible for me due to the stupid laws that punish me more than my neighboor for the same mistake.. so i have no choice but to try and fight it with everything i have, due to the discrimination, i suppose ... heck if im a class A driver and i get 2 tickets because im considered a professional driver, does this mean a CHP should get 4 points if he gets pulled over on his personal vehicle? should a bad woman driver get .5 points on her record because she might be a worser driver than a man driver? LOL
Im not sure what band and radars are used in CA, i read some people talking about KA bands and K bands, and best things that protect against that, and grocery stores use KA bands and red lights use KA bands, but being a noob in radars im just getting started with my research and im sure ill be able to find lots of answers here and lots of good advice.
I wouldnt mind a laser jammer as well, but i think those are illegal in CA i might be wrong
im hoping to get the best protection possible, because my next ticket might cost me my license :(

Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
Welcome to the forum I would recommend 9500ix for the urban areas of so cal with all the red light cameras. Good luck in your fights and those laws are pretty stupid

Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
Where in Cali do you live? Do you speed at all in your rig? What do you drive?

I don't know much about what your locals use. Ask your two friends if there is much K band in your area.
If there is a lot of K band, I say V1, Cheetah C-100 and a laser jammer(Blinder or LI, do your research).
If there is not much K band, I say 9500ix and a laser jammer.
CHP uses only Ka band and laser.
-
Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
I think you should get the 9500ix for your daily driver, but of course of course I would lean this way. Since you don't plan on testing the limits in the rig you should get a Cheetah C50 for both vehicles (move it when needed). The C50 does not violate the CDL rules.
The 9500ix will define all of the SC/RLC and some of the Speed Traps. It has the Radar protection that will get you through most troubles.
The C50 will define even more info on the SC/RLC as well as some speed trap information. The C50 can be used to mark other areas that you note may be of some consequence. Then later you can retrieve the data and mark it on the site for the rest of us.
-
Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
9500ix FTW. It will help with the RLC's for sure.
Unless there are different rules for Class A, you lose your license with 4 points in 12 months .... if you have 2 points for both you may be getting a letter soon.
Sounds to me like it would be worthwhile to hire a lawyer for all your tickets ... 2 points a pop is no joke. By the time you pay the fine and three years of insurance increases, a lawyer would have been cheaper.
Or just learn how to fight your own. I would have used a TBD for both and then gotten Trial De Novo's ... 4 chances to win instead of just 2.

Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
Is cheetah C50 a laser jammed ?
I tried fighting first one by mail, got denied, then tried to reschedule and messed that part up and missed court.
Current ticket I thought I'd give it in person a shot, reschedule court even, copstill showed up, he had 3 cases on same light camera, 2 defendents didn't show lol, appeal won't do much probably, but there is still a slight chance maybe.
Would it beworth it to buy 2 IX models and set up one forward and one facing to the rear, to catch cops if they are coming up from the rear?
What about those cops hiding behind overpasses, I don't see radars saving you on those?
-
Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
The cheetah is a device to alert you to the red light cameras. cheetah.com You are right on the overpass thought. My detector is good for 80% of the encounters, but down here in socal they use the overpasses a lot. I came onto an entrance ramp the other day onto I5 and chp was sitting there shooting cars as they passed. Picking up that with a detector is difficult. Then they were shooting laser the other day with about 4 chase cars on the far side of an overpass. You can not rely on the dector to alert you to laser like radar. Jammer is the best bet for that. It can get expensive, and you can still get nailed. In your situation I would fight any ticket with a lawyer. You have too much at stake. And I'd have a detector, jammer and cheetah for sure. The jammer is illegal to use, but used descretly, meaning turn it off as soon as your speed is legal is what I do.

Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
Man that really sucks.
I use the 9500ix for in town and it has the RLC (Red Light Camera) alerts. It has online weekly updates for the database and they send an email for which states the updates are for. The updates are a given for the first 90 days, then a subscription applies for extended updates. I think there is a 1 year, 3 year and lifetime. I opted for the 3 year which was something like 30 bucks. Didn't go for any longer because I don't know how long I'll have it, and beside, what may be new introduced on the market, I may or may not upgrade by then.
I use the V1 for out on the open roads (freeways, Interstate, Highway etc.) and like the rear detection sensitivity. The arrows and bogey counter is kind of addictive. Not much else to say but the V1 is popular so I decided to get one.
No regrets on either for my driving.
(added) you may or may not have heard that they want to add speed cams to many existing RLCs - And John McGuiness (maybe spelled right/wrong) the Sac county sheriff does not like the idea as they are looking at it for revenue and not for safety reasons.

For one, Trial by declaration first, if you LOOSE that THEN de novo. For 2 if the officer who witnessed wasn't there to testify against you the other officer is hearsay so you should have used proper OBJECTION, not TESTIMONY to object to his testimony as hearsay and motion for a directed verdict. If you did do this and the judge wasn't hearing it you have grounds for an appeal.

Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
Welcome to the forum, hand:) Best of luck with your tickets.Sounds like Ca.sucks if you get tickets when you have CDL. I would agree get a lawyer. It would be worth the money, and I think they can keep it off your record,at least here in Texas that's the way it works.

Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
does the 9500IX protect 360 degrees?
so it wont do that good on the freeways?
V1 is better for freeways, why is this?
should i get one for freeway and one for city, ill do anything i need to to protect my butt lol i think i got 3 years to drive like a gramma before the points fall off
-
Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
Welcome Nick. I have a CDL too and the Bel STi in the big rig has saved me countless times as you may want to think about it. As long as it's pulled down if the weigh station is open, you are good to go.

Any decent RD will give plenty of detection distance to threats from behind, including the 9500ix.

The V1 is the only windshield mounted RD that has both a forward racing and rear facing antenna, which gives the V1 two advantages over the competition. The first one is the arrows, which lets the user know if the radar contact is ahead or behind the car. The second one is superior detection range on contacts that approach the rear of the vehicle. The V1's rear range is roughly double that of the 9500ix. Combine those features with excellent sensitivity and top-notch reactivity that no other RD can match and you have a RD that is a beast on the highway. The other reason that the V1 gets the "highway" tag is due to the it's excessive false alerts in the city, which is too much for most normal humans to deal with(V1 Zombies not included in the group labeled "normal humans":)).

No. Only a total loser would need two RDs for one car! Oh wait. :(
Here's what you need to avoid 99.9% of speeding tickets:
1. A good RD
2. A good laser jammer
3. A good understanding of the tactics used by the LEOs you encounter and an understanding of how to best defend against those tactics.

Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
good advice and info, im waiting for my 9500xi and ill be looking for cops while testing the radar, maybe get a kick out of every time it goes off and i see a cop hiding, before he catches me accidentally speeding :)

OK, a couple of pet peeves:
1) The radar detector you have purchased is called a 9500ix, not a 9500xi. It is amazing how often this mistake happens around here.
2) This is a radar:

This is a radar detector:

What you have purchased is called a radar detector(RD for short), not a radar.

I totally agree with your suggestions and situational awareness always - but for now, I'll stick to my 2 RDs instead of 1 - I'm using one for when I do my running around staying in town, and then the other when out on the open road out of town. I never use both at the same time - only one or the other :(

Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
i decided to go ahead and buy the V1 also, i bought this one used on ebay for $250
they are known for tons of false alarms due to door sensors and everything around town, correct? but on the freeway there is no such false alarms and has a longer range front and back
so my total investment is currently at $650
$400 9500ix
$250 V1
seems a bit much, but might be very well worth it for protections around town and freeway ...
now if you are driving around town 70% of the time and 30% of the time get on the freeway, are you better off with an IX or the V1??

Good luck with that. You should know that about 50% of used V1s show up needing repair. What version is it? There are many older versions out there that do not perform anywhere near the standards of today's V1s.

1.8 version, what repairs do they need and how do you know if it needs repairs?

What usually happens when a V1 needs repair is that the detected frequeny range will drift. What that means is that when a properly working V1 sweeps the K band for example, which is 24.050 - 24.250 GHz, it will slightly oversweep the band, something like 24.040 - 24.260 GHz. A broken V1's sweep range will be off, so its sweep range might have drifted down to something like 23.945 - 24.165 GHz. So, when a LEO comes by running K band radar at 24.145 GHz, the V1 alerts as normal, but when a LEO comes by running K band radar at 24.180 GHz, that is outside its drifted sweep range, the V1 doesn't even know the radar signal is there and never makes a peep. My used version 1.8, revision 3.812 V1 showed up even more busted than the example I described and couldn't detect X or K band at all. I had to immediately send it in for repair.
To fix something like this, VR goes in and changes out the broken component, which costs $45.
Do you know what software revision the one you purchased is?

Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
CHP like to hide behind the walls on the entrance ramps on the I-5 in Sac and shoot you in the rear as you pass with instant on. Just a word of caution from my observations passing through that area. Enjoy your V1.

Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
NickT916, Welcome to the forum!
I used to have a CDL, but dropped it because I didn't need it any more--and there was no point in risking the extra penalties I'd get for non-com veh offenses.
Both your tickets are what I call "Stupid Tickets". Not that you are stupid, or were doing something stupid, rather that they are petty B.S. tickets. Getting popped running 30+ over the speed limit, deliberately speeding in a school zone, and stuff like that is a real ticket. If I got one of those, well....I deserve it.
For your two tickets, the 9500ix is exactly what you need. It rocks for in-city and around town driving; it can learn to ignore (lockout) known false alerts like door openers and alert to red light cameras. Like any tool, you need to learn how to use it, and forum member CJR238 has a bunch of excellent write-ups on it.
The V1 is more of an open road & highway detector. I don't have one, but I'll probably get one within the next 3-4 months. I can tell you that I really, really like the idea of the arrows telling me what direction the radar signal is coming from.
Next, spend a lot of time browsing and reading through this forum; there are a lot of seasoned, experienced, professional drivers here, and the knowledge you can gain is every bit as valuable as the "knowledge" a RD gives you when it alerts to radar, and maybe even moreso. Learn how to drive, how to identify threats and avoid them; learn what enforcement tactics are used in your area, when they are used, how they are used.
In short, this is a war and you absolutely must know your enemy better than they know you.

Although I use the 9500ix when I'm running around in town, and the V1 for out on the open roads, I also find the arrows & bogey counter addicting. On top of that, the V1 rear sensitivity. I had read & heard about the arrows on how folks really liked that. I didn't think it was too much of a big deal, but found myself looking at the arrows more than I thought I would. Kind of hard to explain but a nice feature to have. And I find the on the 9500ix with it's RLC and lockout features can keep me sane during all my in town running around without overdoing it with constant annoying false alerts.

Have to keep an eye out on 80 & 99. Highway 65 seems like it has backed down a little.
My last 2 trips through Aurburn, they were shooting cars passing an overpass with chase cars lined up.
Now I see CHP in black and white, and new motorcycles it looks like for Roseville. I have one Blvd where the moto-cops constantly nab drivers N/B with laser. They usually use the brush to make it difficult to see them, but a few times I have seen them sit right in the open on the side of the road and cars still fly at and by them like they didn't see anything. I seen a few jump on the brakes just when they reach the moto-cop, right in front of them. Kind of fun watching sometimes. My wife said it was like watching people launching a boat at a ramp and have no idea how to back up a trailer. They make panic moves - but at a launch ramp traffic can really get twisted up. Seen some good rage of all kinds.
Ah - I got to go for a ride.

Re: Im a Class A driver in CA ... tickets suck x10 for me!!
Welcome to th forum, I live in Sacramento as well and your going to see Ka is used about 90% of the time here. The other 10% is laser (used by CHP). K band is not used at all in Sacramento and falses happen alot from K band. Red light cameras are a big problem here, although just remember where they are and you will be fine.
The motorcycle cops use instant on Ka band 100% of the time for watch out for that. They are sneaky as heck!
I saw you have the V1, congratz on that, The arrows are awsome. if you bought it use I would send it in for a tune up just to be safe. Just call V1 and ask when it was last sent in for a tune up.

I live in SoCal and have both V1 and 9500i. My v1 is used in my car now and I gave my wife the 9500i. The arrows has won me over. Very addicting.

I have noticed an increase of laser use by the moto-cops on the back side of Roseville's newer developed area. Seems a little barren but they nab drivers all the time because it's so open and little traffic on some areas. Noticed a squad of brand new bikes, and they are quiet. Not HDs I guess.
65 just approaching Sheridan has a new K-Band Speed sign for Northbound traffic.
Just the north side of Lincoln, use to be a heavy LEO trap but has backed off for some months now. After driver conditioning, they may all a sudden hit it hard again - that's what I been hearing, but don't know when.
Also heard, CHP going to venture more often further north of Lincoln.
V1 - open road
9500ix - town

2Bolt have you seen K band being use here in the area? To tell you the truth I have turned off completely. The only K band I've seen is the speed signs. Of course if I travel outside of Sacramento I do turn it on.

I have had 1 time that I was getting K-Band that seem to be a Sac County Sheriff car stopped over to my right side. I haven't got the K-Band all other times in that spot and I drive by the spot on my way home from work regularly. So the only time I saw that LEO sitting there, my RD alerted K-Band and was strongest just when I got up to the car, then ramped down as I passed by. I saw nothing else around except that Sac County Sheriff car.
The lady LEO didn't look at me (no other traffic around) and it looked like she was keyboarding on a laptop or something. Weird.
(added) the k-band speed sign on 65 just heading into Sheridan wasn't working the other day, but is now back to working a couple days ago. I think all that cloudy weather didn't do enough to the solar panel so it ran out of gas by the time I approach in the morning.
When it was first installed and activated, I tried to see what the RDs would do. When 65 curves to where you are facing it about 1.7-1.8 miles before (I think), both detectors picked it up and kept the ramp up as I approach. After passing it, the V1 picks it up further/longer because of the rear sensitivity.
