How do I get around RDD with a V1?
In the states that it's illegal to run RD’s how would I get around a RDD? When I get an alert just shut off my V1 or when I see a LEO?

Most LEOs that run Spectre, don't run radar at the same time. If the point is to find RDs, then it doesn't make sense to emit radar and warn RD users of your presense. There is no way around RDDs with a V1.

Wait wait... Zombies since BV have said that Mike V. will have an answer for spectre ever since the Sti came out... you're, you're, you're saying that isn't true? :(

Most people who run in VA (including myself at times)get away with unhooking it just when you get the first alert - assuming that it is mounted high by the RVM and out of sight.
In reality (from my experience) most VSP don't actually have spectres, and even if you get caught, in practice they don't take the RD away from you if you are polite b/c of the hassle for paperwork.

Re: How do I get around RDD with a V1?
If I lived where a radar detector was illegal and wanted to use a V1 (which I would not), I'd keep a cheap-o radar detector in my car at all times just in case. If he wanted to confiscate it, I'd just give him that one instead of the V1.

No problem. Most of us who live in VA consider the 80 dollar fine better than a speeding ticket. I just keep an eye on my rear view, and if I see something that looks like a LEO (or is marked), I reach up to my RVM (look like I am adjusting it) and unhook the RD. I've made 3 or 4 trips from Richmond to the MD Border in VA without an issue, however, I do unhook the RD when I get into Fairfax county. My reasoning is twofold, one, it is hard to speed in the DC Suburbs, and two, fairfax (in my experience) has the best equipment, hence leading me to think that they would have more spectres per officer. But there isn't any evidence (that i've seen) to back that supposition up.

Yup, one member learned the hard way.

Re: How do I get around RDD with a V1?
They cannot legally take it away without giving it back can they?
Either way the way to get around RDD with a V1 is to unplug it:D

They are allowed to take it for evidence, and once you pay the ticket / show up to court you can get it back or have them ship it to your address at your expense.
§ 46.2-1079. Radar detectors; demerit points not to be awarded.
This section shall not be construed to authorize the forfeiture to the Commonwealth of any such device or mechanism. Any such device or mechanism may be taken by the arresting officer if needed as evidence, and, when no longer needed, shall be returned to the person charged with a violation of this section, or at that person's request, and his expense, mailed to an address specified by him. Any unclaimed devices may be destroyed on court order after six months have elapsed from the final date for filing an appeal.

Re: How do I get around RDD with a V1?
What makes me mad is how does that make the road safer? It’s just a way to collect revenue I guess.

Re: How do I get around RDD with a V1?
not sure how much time you (the OP) spend in "RD=illegal states", but this was a big part of my reasoning behing picking up and STI-driver vs the V1.
i live in NC, but have a sister in dental school in VA that i visit from time to time. my wife and i love visiting DC, so we run through VA quite a bit. getting a V1 really wasn't an option for me.
to answer your question, i guess you could just unplug it whenever you got an alert. then again, if a LEO is behind you and sees you fidgeting around (high or low), then that is usually a red flag for the cop

Re: How do I get around RDD with a V1?
Is the V1 new and under the 30 return policy? If yes, return it, or sell it and get another RD that will work, and make you sleep better. :)

Re: How do I get around RDD with a V1?
I got paced in Va years ago and the cop saw the detector. He gave me the speech about it being illegal and recorded the serial # and gave it back to me. Got a ticket but I lived in NY at the time and I just paid it. It wasn't a V1 though.

Re: How do I get around RDD with a V1?
Buy a RedLine, :D
When im in VA i unplug it just when I get the first alert, or in slow traffic on the highway encase they sneak up on me from the shoulder. If i lived in VA or traveled there more often i would install a power switch.

Re: How do I get around RDD with a V1?
From what I understand it is only illegal to OPERATE a detector in VA correct? I may be wrong, but if I'm not wrong then just unplug it as soon as you get the alert and hopefully you picked him up before his spectre picked you up. If I'm wrong then you should look into the Redline or Sti Driver

I don't think you can even have one, and i don't think putting it in your trunk protects you if they find it ether.

Yea I think it's illegal IN the vehicle, I remember reading an article about it when CT banned RDs and how the cops were saying you can purchase and own one, but you can't put it in your car, if you purchase one you gotta walk home with it or take your bike or something cus you can't transport it. This confused me cus I wondered about how the RDs got delivered to the store in the first place :p

I can just imagine them pulling over a truck driver who was just making a routine delivery for an electronic store that had just purchased a bunch of radar detectors. That would be something else.

I wonder if the federal ban on commercial vehicles is a posession or operation type ban:p

VA Law has two points about this:
§ 46.2-1079. Radar detectors; demerit points not to be awarded.
Except as provided in subsection B of this section, the presence of any such prohibited device or mechanism in or on a motor vehicle on the highways of the Commonwealth shall constitute prima facie evidence of the violation of this section. The Commonwealth need not prove that the device or mechanism in question was in an operative condition or being operated.
B. A person shall not be guilty of a violation of this section when the device or mechanism in question, at the time of the alleged offense, had no power source and was not readily accessible for use by the driver or any passenger in the vehicle.
Thats what the law says - not sure what they do in practice, but I would imagine that if they see it, it's a ticket (IE, I wouldn't want to open up my glovebox with one in it).

Yea, I would imagine the burden of proof shifts to the defendant to prove it was not hooked up to a power source.

Re: How do I get around RDD with a V1?
Killswitch. Something that just requires a nice natural motion and can be operated without suspicion. You're really going to screw with your RD when your first warning of the cop is seeing them in your mirror?
Concealed display is a fantastic idea too.

Re: How do I get around RDD with a V1?
The VA law is about the power source.
In reality though a cop can give you a ticket for whatever the **** he wants. If it holds up in court is another story.
