Which undetectable detector to get?
I'm not getting rid of my V1, i'm just going to get another undetectable RD just incase.
I have my STI - R, but i'd like a dash mounted one. I don't see any reason to get a STI Driver because A) i already had one and know what it's like and B) because my STI R and STI D would probably be pretty similar.
I really want the redline, but if it's rampup is as bad as my 9500i was, i'd probably end up chucking it. But i've seen a lot of videos of it's great range, but i've also seen a lot of videos of it's bad rampup.
What do we think boys and girls?

Re: Which undetectable detector to get?
Escort Redline. From what I've read, K band rampup is ok but Ka band rampup is horrible.
-
Re: Which undetectable detector to get?
K band is fine, Ka needs work, but it's not a deal-breaker for me. Not with the range I'm getting.;)
-
Re: Which undetectable detector to get?
RL is a very strong RD. Running it with my STi-R, they are neck and neck, but to be honest I cannot live without my arrows and rear antenna.
The difference in range between the RL and V1 is negligible IMHO. The RL's ability to see around curves and over hills is nice but my STi-R already fills that role.
Just my two cents.;)
-
Re: Which undetectable detector to get?
Well you have the Sti-R, don't want the Sti driver, don't want the Redline because of ramp up. What's left to choose from?

Id have to say get the Redline and run it in Escorts version of threat mode and turn automute on. This gives you the good threat mode while you can run spec on the STi-r, the automute kills the rampup problem since the STi-rs rampup is good you can listen to that, and you can safely run the STi segmented without worrying about out of tune guns or those weird stalkers.

I wouldnt let a bad rampup keep me from buying maybe the best windshield mounted detector on the market. I tolerate it but better a bad ramp up than no warning at all. You already have an M3 detector so you know about the off-axis performance. No RD can touch it for off-axis radar detection.

Re: Which undetectable detector to get?
Heard this was the best on the market...
The Cobra ESD-6060 Laser/Radar detector
https://www2.lsmsecure.com/itd/shop/images/T/PP990.jpg
Undetectable by VG2 and the Spectre!!!
/end sarcasm.
On the real I'd go with the Redline if you have the money, but since many LEO's run C/O around you on the highways it might get annoying as hell. Really sucks VA still bans RD's.

This was what I was kinda thinking. Not sure how many detectors you need in one car before it turns into overkill, I run my primary (V1) and my Redline as a backup JIC my V1 breaks down for some odd reason or I want to give my V1 a break.

i know the STI R and V1 interfere, but would a redline and STI R interfere?

They should not and EscortRadar has said they wouldn't, but we also didn't used to think the V1 would either so were going to test it anyway

Getcha one of these. These things pickup all the kazillion bands of radar and not to leave out laser high, laser mid, laser low and the laserettes. :dance3: Also be careful to where you might lay it down because they are so stealth you might not be able to see/find it again for being soooo undetectable.
-
Re: Which undetectable detector to get?
Redline is the best undetectable RD on the market at the moment.

Re: Which undetectable detector to get?
i hope its true what you say zerby... it just sucks its not easy to conceal... :(
BTW due to many recommendations here on the forums, i picked one up last week :D
Let see how it plays out with the boys in the commonwealth..

portables have an advantage in concealment - you can put them in your pocket.
Anti radar detector laws usually have a section allowing the searching of cars for prohibited devices. Most leo's these days also have recording devices, and will have to tell you they are searching your vehicle for a radar dedector.
Your person, is not the vehicle - that would require different circumstances and provisions. FWIW, in quite a lot of jurisdictions, handbags and briefcases are also personal and not seacrhable without proper reason (ie if they find drugs in your car).
If you really wanted to be clever, carry a briefcase open on the floor, put the detector between the top of the passenger seat and the head restraint with a good view, and if pulled over, detector is into the briefcase and snapped shut before you even stop. Any officer asks you to open it - you flat out refuse - "confidential client information and files in there officer, no you cannot open it." when he asks, are you a lawyer, you say - " what relevance to my legal qualifications have to you right now?" .
Simple pullover, is now a careeer risk for the leo - he will search reasonably, bid you good day and leave ;)

Try again, F. Lee. Furtive gestures give the officer reasonable suspicion, and you WILL end up getting searched because of it, like it or not. And you won't be able to do a damn thing about it except wish you knew more about the law than what you learned watching TV.
-
Re: Which undetectable detector to get?
So how about, dont give the "furtive" gestures then?
If you cant orderly, unplug a radar detector, put it in your pocket etc, without looking like an ice addict, then dont play the game.
If any officer is aware of remote installs, it will be found very quickly. An officer cannot use a suspected radar pull over to search a person, only the vehicle, in all of the jurisdictions for which I am aware - these are across the board in australia. Check the legislation enabling radar detector searches in the area concerned.
If you are really that worried, then record the interaction with a mobile phone - not hard to do.
If an officer is prepared to flout the law in order to find evidence, then he risks the very evidence he is gaining, and secondly, he is selling his integrity down the river.
TV - LOL - dont apply your own standards to me thanks very much

Easy for a low mount, which most of us don't do here.
Don't forget to wipe of the suction cup marks and tuck the hardwire in the headliner while he's tailgating you with all his bright lights on after hitting you with instant-on while you were travelling at night and he was hiding behind a bridge or some other large opaque object.
I should stop playing the game and drive the PSL from now on.
-
Re: Which undetectable detector to get?
dpatel01 - unfortunately, in these jurisdictions you cant have the best of all worlds - you have to make compromises (ie low and accessible over high and best effectiveness). potentially you could mount onto a gps unit for instance, but generally a high mount on the screen can be seen too easily from behind, as it makes a sillouette. i've in the past either used a passenger seat mount (under head restraint), or on dash - using rubber mat to stop it sliding.
Power is ubiquitous in cars now - kids dvd players, mobile phones, laptops, ipods - hell, without a RD i'd have 3 or 4 power supplies running round my car at any time ;)
The unseen approach from behind though isnt so easy, in fact almost impossible as you say, if you have a mount on a windscreen, which is why i havent done it personally. I've managed to get a rd depowered and on person on a couple of occasions - once was a friendly 5 minute chat on the side of the road with unit bulging in pocket - for what little experience i have counts anyway

LOL! Good advice, for sure! But it's easier said than done. And I wasn't talking about an officer searching for your RD. I was talking about him searching you simply because of the furtive gestures you make while hiding it. He doesn't know what you're hiding. He just knows you're hiding something. So now you have gone from a simple speeder to a potential armed felon, and the encounter is going to go quickly downhill from there.

Re: Which undetectable detector to get?
Holy **** batman - potential weapon in the pocket? Fortunately its not a consideration for our LEO's. Hadnt thought that an officer would go that way in their thoughts - I would hope that where you are, the car you drive, and the way you dress would help things a little here.
Ultimately, situational awareness should be so that you dont get a sudden encounter without any warning 99% of the time - a car directly behind you that can see in the car (tinted windows perhaps?) is not the best - like most here a set of lights that approaches from behind is considered to be leo untill confirmed otherwise (great in theory I know)

The LEO can't see your pocket from behind your car. He just sees you moving around and trying to stash something. Only a complete idiot would assume it's "just a radar detector". Such assumptions will get him killed. And sure, how you dress helps a little, but again, when they see you stashing something, all bets are off. The well dressed guy in the BMW is just as likely to have drugs and guns as the scrote bag in the old Mustang. Consequently, your best bet is to mount your detector where it is out of sight to begin with, so you don't have to try and stash it at the last second.

Re: Which undetectable detector to get?
Swamp, it may be of interest to you, that your fourth amendment and probable cause is derived from British common law - the same common law from which australia derives its implicit rights for citizens, and standards of evidence and non interference from authorities etc.
for instance, wikipedia on the 4th amendment notes the reduced privacy expected of motor vehicles, but also requires the item for search to be in "plain view" - further, searching the car in plain view is one thing given probable cause (there's 2 hoops to jump through), but searching passengers and their effects is excluded.
Whether you can search the driver and under what circumstances would require more detail. just because some police officers give the impression you have no rights at the side of the road, doesnt mean it is so -

SS you are so right , I read leos saying that nothing will stop
them to find a hidden rd ...either in the car or on you ...just because ,
they claim '' it is unlawfull to impede police duty ''
I know first hand when I refused a search ...ok he said ...I will call
a towing , then a specialist will dismantle your car untill he find
your rd . He had detected positively my cobra ''undetectable'' with
his recalibrated vg-2 ...this is pre-sti history :D

Re: Which undetectable detector to get?
pharmaboy,
You are arguing about how things "should" be, apparently based on British and Austrailan law.
We are telling you how things are in the United States based on our personal experiences here
I got searched on US Hwy 82 just across the Texas border into Arkansas near Texarkana in 1982 by a State trooper. I was stopped solely because I had an out of state license plate (Colorado). I was driving a camper van; after he ran my license and registration, he told me to step out of the vehicle. He didin't ask--he ordered me--and he proceded to search it.
He found a candle in a jar and looked at me and said "You better be careful--they use these." Then he picked up a book of matches, and said "They use these, too."
I stood there looking out over the bayou (deep water forested swampland) and realized that if he ever decided that I was one of them that I would more than likely end up somewhere in that bayou, never to be seen again.
Fortunately, I had nothing illegal, and after 15 minutes he let me go.
I've held a pistol in my hand and aimed it between another man's eyes (he was raging drunk beating up an aunt) and I was as cool and calm as I've ever been in my life, my heart never missed a beat and my hands were rock steady, but that State trooper left me shaking in my boots.
I can still hear him saying,
"You're not one of them are you?"
"You're not one of them are you?"
"You're not one of them are you?"
