is cobra better than pni and whistler?
from all the reviews, it seems that bel, escort, and valentine consistantly performs well with almost all their models, where as cobra, pni, and whistler only performs well with their high-end units, so in terms of the brands, i would call bel, escort, and valentine first tier and cobra, pni, and whistler second tier.
so, is cobra the king of second tier radar detectors?
Whistler has proven to had a better detector then cobra.
I would have to say no. Cobra seems to have a very large variation between runs. Some people that had XRS9700's said they would give a max of 7 seconds of warning, some have said that they gave a good 20-30.
Whistler seems to have more consistant quality, but they do false to other detectors quite a bit.
Whistler is a better choice than the cobra.
Also take a look at the bel 795 from Radio shack.
I would have to say Whistler over Cobra any day of the week for me.
Cheap Bels > Whistlers > Cobras

Crapras ain't called "Crapras" for nothing.
Look at the low-end Bels if you're considering a primary detector, the Whistlers if you're looking for a backup (I have a 1730 as my backup and love it), the Crapras if it's a birthday present for someone you don't like, and the RMRs if you want to jam radar...when the gun is 2 feet from your car.

Which I think if you go to the GOL site and look at it you will see it the Cobra aka CRAPA!! the 9700 there top model has shorter distance by 457' VS the Pro 58 and the pro 58 will save you about 50 bucks.
I own the 9300 and it consantly falsed Ka, out of the package, well I thought it was working, untill I found this site but by then I couldnt take it back.
