friend in pa. cant decide if he wants a rd or a cb

So a friend and I were talking and he can't decislde if he wants a cb or rd. I personally plan on getting the 695se. However he doesn't think its worth it. He does make some points but I was wondering what everyone else thinks. He wants a cheap cobra cb I.think he said its 37 or one tthats a bit more because" radar detectors are not worth it in pa cause only the state police use radar. Does nothing for the locals. A cb, you can ask or people will tell you where there ia local and state police. I don't need a radar detector" I tired to make a point about one save and it pays for its self. But that didn't work. Any tips to give him?

The CB serves little purpose in detecting local police in PA. When they are called out on the CB, it's rare that they are doing traffic enforcement, because the majority of notices on the CB are on highways where the locals don't really enforce traffic code.

YMMV, but I think it depends on where you [and your friend] drive the most. If you're on a highway with a large PSP presence, get a radar detector. If you drive in cities with all local police, I don't really know if I'd suggest a CB...I'd probably actually suggest a scanner. While traffic enforcement might be difficult to decipher on a scanner in a major city like Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, the small towns in the country and suburbs of the major cities frequently do mention their stops and it makes the scanner almost invaluable.

A CB has it's use but if it's a CB versus a radar detector, I'd go with the radar detector. And choose something that is effective in picking up I/O and tricky radar shots from low powered guns.

That's just my two cents though...your location may require different options than what I suggest.

LIDAR is not used in PA so unless he frequently travels outside the state, he doesn't really need laser jammers. :)

With no LIDAR and only PsP using radar probably 65% of the time with some type of VASCAR, I'd CB too.

They both complement each other. I wouldn't go without either one.

I've had saves against C/O K-band in broad daylight that weren't reported on the CB. How sad would it be to get a ticket that way?

I'd go with a radar detector. If you really figure it up, it pays for itself AND THEN SOME. And that's figuring it on the cost of a V1 ($400). You need a V1 in PA, there's nothing that will protect you more. Some will cry and say that a redline beats a V1, but it doesn't even come close. Let's take a look at some features here...

V1

-Great sensitivity
-Arrows (not particularly useful in PA, because police can't use moving radar. But if you ever go out of state, it defintely helps.)
-Bogey counter (This will save your ass big time. Supercowpowers, a PA member here, posted about an encounter where he was going through a construction zone that he knew had 1 K-band speed sign. So every time he went through there, he just ignored the alert because it showed 1 bogey. One day he was going through the construction zone and it went from 1 bogey to 2 bogeys. He knew there was something lurking. Sure enough, there was a PA state trooper running I/O K band. I believe that, in PA, either +5 or +10 MPH over the PSL in a construction zone is a MANDATORY license suspension. Don't fool around with the PA troopers man. I rarely see them doing enforcement in my area, but when they are running it, you want to be well prepared for the battle. They use low powered k band guns that are very hard to detect. If you don't have a V1 for bogey counter + great sensitivity, you can say goodbye to your good driving record and possibly even your license. Do it right the first time and get a V1.

Yes, just to confirm - any citation for speeding in a work zone which is written for 11 mph or more above the posted work zone speed limit incurs a 15 day license suspension, upon being found guilty of the offense, in addition to the normal fines and points.
