Trapster disappointment
I used Trapster yesterday from California through Nevada and Utah. I got a nice glass mount for my smart phone and was using it - works great. I saw numerous radar traps along the way, some parked, some rolling. I reported about 5 to 6 along the way, but saw zero other people reporting along the way.
Is anybody out there?

Re: Trapster disappointment
if my phone could get trapster I would defiantly be using, but well my phone sucks
-
Re: Trapster disappointment
My area can be slow to dead at times too. I get the text alerts to the phone and it goes bonkers during the holidays.
-
Re: Trapster disappointment
It seems to be getting a little more and more popular as time goes by. I can tell more people are active Trapster users now than there were when I first started using it; although, it's no where close to being popular enough in my area to use the live update stuff.

Re: Trapster disappointment
I think Trapster is a big waist of time.
I think it would work better if you had to pay for a membership.
-
Re: Trapster disappointment
I use it occasionally. One frustrating thing about it is that the reports I submit keep getting deleted. And these are for absolutely real speed traps.

I've ran into the same issues, but they normally aren't deleted; instead, they get thumbed down. I got an email from Trapster about applying for a moderator position, but when I applied, I got an email back stating that I don't use the site enough to yet be a moderator.
-
Re: Trapster disappointment
I stopped using trapcrap when 1. the traps I posted were getting a bunch of No's. 2. they were continuously deleted. I have images/video of known traps and they simply kept getting deleted by the mods.
-
Re: Trapster disappointment
I got all excited about Trapster a few months ago, as I was driving north of Las Vegas and I got a report "moments ago" of a LEO in hiding and the report was spot on.
Since then, pretty much nothing.
I'm a software developer and I could probably write everything Trapster does..... hummmm..... A new product called "Open Road"?
-
Re: Trapster disappointment
I use it constantly, but speed enforcement isn't huge here, but sporadic enough to make it successful.

I don't who would pay for that crap?
My sign in won't work and won't reset I give up deleted it

Re: Trapster disappointment
The lack of live police updates is frustrating. I believe Trapster is working on a way to encourage more users to report live police. As far as you guys who are having legitimate traps deleted, give me some addresses of the locations, or report a trap that gets deleted and tell me your trapster user name. I'll make sure they stay put.

I had the same issue with my sign-in after about 30 minutes I got it working but it was a real pain. I almost just stopped messing with it also.

Re: Trapster disappointment
I noticed by watching on the web that reports in my area happen only around rush hour. Of course that's when the most people are driving around spotting traps. Other times of day, it seems less useful.
In all honesty, it looks like kind of the same deal as using a CB, it all depends who's on and reporting at the time. My phone isn't able to use Trapster (it's and old non-GPS, non-smart phone). When I do get a phone that's up to it, I'll give it a try. Until then, I'll keep loading the Trapster POI on my GPS.

Thing is I got the reset code a few times and still won't work And I'm not making a new account

Re: Trapster disappointment
I just load the red light database into my Garmin, and leave the rest to the escort. Trapster is pretty lame in my area.

Re: Trapster disappointment
While I see the bashing of Trapster, I must remind you all that police tend to move pretty fast out of their trap location. I would rather have an alert than none at all. Notifying me that police were possibly in the area.
Think about it, all of us with radar detectors would sure love to know police were around us, but when the police do not have their radar on, we have very few clues till it's too late.
Vascar, pacing, instant on , photo radar, red light cameras all can get you without warning from a detector. SO before you go bashing a product, as I have said many times. It's better to have as many countermeasures rather to run with only a few.
What I am suppressed to see is that none of you who hate trapster mention missing that trapster does not have moving live police.
A neat idea would be to be be able to enter the direction the officer was seen and trapster could forecast the direction over the next few miles and notify the user that a officer was seen headed their direction. If the officer turns on to another street or such, so what. At least then you would know the officer was seen at the reporting location and the direction we was headed. Example: Post Live Police Headed East from MM 21, Trapster would issue an alert for MM21 east to the next exit with a colored line showing the traveled road. The line could exist until the next major street or exit. depending on which type of road you were on.

Re: Trapster disappointment
That last idea is one I'd like to see implemented.

Re: Trapster disappointment
Regardless of the trap accuracy and updates, I don't use Trapster anymore because it completely locks up on my Android phone and crashes. This didnt use to happen. It has been this way for months without any updates. From reading Trapster reviews, I am not the only person to have this problem.

And if laser or type of radar. :)

Re: Trapster disappointment
Trapster was being used a lot last year in my area when I got my 9500ix and became 'passionate' about RD's. I don't use it as frequently anymore unless I remember or someone puts an alert in close to me and it reminds me to use trapster. Frankly I'd love it if I could interface Trapster with my RD to automate a lot of it. It becomes a little bit of a pain and distraction to add locations.

This I think is an awesome idea for Trapster. In particular, when you consider the dangersof playing whith a smartphone while speeding down the highway (tickets and otherwise). This is already available in radaractive, but only if you are using the correct brand of hardware (VI and iPhone). It would be great to see an app for Android and Belscort, or even Cobra. Cobra especially, because they probably have the largest user base.

I noticed the same thing. The town of Summersville, WV is one long speed trap.....no alerts at all from Trapster.........but to keep it real, my iQ didn't have any pseed traps there, either. Anyone not from WV would get a ticket. It's a town of 3,300 people, but they write OVER 18,000 tickets a year, generating almost $10 million.

Re: Trapster disappointment
Well, I gave it a shot again on my trip to Vegas. Even though my phone plugged in to external power source, the power in did not keep up with power out, and it went dead before I reached destination. Not to mention there were zero others posting live police. Too bad, it is a good idea but until we reach critical mass, its a useless toy.

I just wish new users would be on moderated status for their first 20 or so submissions. I have to clean up more crap than you can believe because of noobs posting traps every time they see a cop parked in front of someone's house, in a parking lot, etc., that isn't doing speed or other type of traffic enforcement. I think ANY submission for any kind of static automated enforcement should be moderated period.
It would be great if they would just do away with the school zone, dangerous curve, dangerous intersection, etc., points. Those have just been rife with abuse from the start.

I feel your pain bro. Too much noob spam :(

Re: Trapster disappointment
Hell, I just wish Trapster still worked for me. Since switching to Firefox, it makes my browser and computer go haywire.
-
Re: Trapster disappointment
I downloaded Trapster yesterday and there are no marked locations near me. It's weird because several of those roads have major donation centers.
I'm gonna register and mark them, but i think it's gay if they get deleted. It's all about timing!

It works fine on my Firefox, and I'm on Linux. Though I noticed that my Browser seems to have a memory leak if I leave Trapter's map running for days on end. Since they changed the main page to not be the map, I haven't had an issue.
I think the map is Adobe Flash based, so you might be having an issue with the plugin. I would try clearing my cache and installing the latest Flash.

Bart,
While I feel your pain. You must know that when you allow people open access to something there are those who will abuse it and those who will test it, and finally those who use it when they are supposed to.
So yes it does suck indeed that the map has to be cleaned up so much. But that is also the reason more they are pushing for good moderators to insure accuracy.
You may say police do not sit in some locations however, police tend to sit in parking lots for a few weeks and then they wont be back for months. So remember just because you don't see them does not mean they never sit there.
I don't know much about school zones or curves which I wish I had the option, but for now I don't Known enforcement points are dense around me and can tell you that because of it I am not as receptive to them. Although I should be!

I use trapster on my droid 2 and get occasional 'force-closes' in the ohio area, but not enough of them to make my experience worthless.
Check for updates. I got onto a beta version which reduced the number of these instances.

I have this issue too, and it is a major pain. The charger simply cant keep up.
Try turning off your display to conserve batteries while you are using it and turn on display when you need to report a trap. You can set it so you will still get the audible alerts.

If you have text-while-driving laws in your area, build a mount at the upper corner of your dash for it.
If a cop is really looking at you, it looks like you are adjusting climate control, radio, etc. (which is legal, last i remember!) vs. whipping out a phone and pushing buttons.

after 2 hours a live police trap is automatically deleted.
I had issues with traps showing up in the wrong spot, until I realized I had to have the blue locate-me dot selected for it to put my traps in the right spot.

I dont ever thumb down a 'live police' trap because its highly possible that there was a trap, but the police moved on. If I see someone pulled over near a 'live police' trap where the cop is not there, I assume that was the cop that pulled them over.
As a trapster mod, Ive had serious issues with people reporting fake red light cameras. Many times people think that those little cylindrical cameras at the top of a red light pole is a red light camera - especially if they saw on the news that red light cameras are in their city. I usually send a polite PM and explain thats not really a red light camera.
My job in the state of ohio takes me all over the place so I can investigate and delete these all the time.

Re: Trapster disappointment
After switching from a droid to iPhone the trapster app works flawlessly and has much more extensive features I didn't notice on the droid version. The iPhone kicks droid in the nuts in so many ways. I had no idea until I actually got this iPhone just how much more solid, stable, smooth and enjoyable it is versus the flakey & pain in the butt Capivate by Samsung. I love Samsung netbooks by the way, especially my old N110 (with an Ocz vertex ssd and 2GB ram module). But I stray. Ive started using trapster again on the iPhone and love it. I even get push notifications when the app isnt even running!! Non-iPhone users, you have no idea what you're missing!!

While that may be, some of us would rather not pay the Wireless Walmart. I would never switch just for Trapster itself.

Re: Trapster disappointment
I just tried Trapster on my new Android 2.1 phone today. It seems to freeze before I can drive 5 miles. I need Android for other reasons, so it looks like Trapster has to remain on my TomTom GPS only. If there is a version that works well on Droid, I would love to see it.
When it does work, it seems pretty good. If they can fix the crashing I'll put it back on in a heartbeat.

Good point. Neither would I. As far as paying the wireless walmart (& however you precisely mean that) the choice between droid and iphone for me was based on a bunch of different things. I'd researched pretty well on the differences, the trade-offs, and tried to focus on what really mattered to me.
Come crunch time in the store I used all them for a while in-store, and with the knowledge I had from using a droid for several months the iphone won and AAPL got my money (and AT&T of course, but they woulda got my money if I bought the droid too).
It was just smoother & nimbler when browsing the net and switching between apps. And guess what...no regrets and rave reviews if you ask for them. Mind you, the display on the droid was bigger and I sometimes miss that. But everything I use this phone for, including work apps, it's delivered exactly what it promised. I can't say that about my droid. On several apps it had fail written all over it and left me wanting to throw it out the window at speed.
But back on topic...trapster on iphone pawns trapster on droid. It's ridiculous how far apart they are! This is something I was surprised to learn. I'm actually shocked that I've not read anything strongly along those lines before at this forum.
Bottom line is I think members here who use (or want to use) trapster on their smart phones, they ought to make the device decision with the knowledge of the HUGE difference in features and performance between droid and iphone.
If a smooth and feature-rich trapster app is important to you, then as of this moment, you only have one choice.

When it asks which program I want to use to open the file, which program should I choose?
