what is the best radar?
I am looking for a new radar around the price range of $100, I dont care if it goes a little over. What is the best detector for that price range? I've been looking at some whistler's and cobra's but I don't know which way to go. Thanks for the help!

Re: what is the best radar?
jlopshire welcome to the forum, and I really quick want to say be prepared for some of the responses you may get in regards to your question.
Now that, that is out of the way, if you're looking not to go too much over $100 here are the ones I would suggest. Give me a call and I can help you out on price.
Bel Vector 955
Whistler XTR-690SE
Whistler XTR-695

Re: what is the best radar?
$100 RD?
Your going to be giving up quite a bit of performance for that low of a price IMO.
Welcome to our most excellent site.

Re: what is the best radar?
Thank you! And I'm willing to spend around 200, just depends if its worth it. I know that the top detectors are up there around 400 or 500. I'm only 17, so I don't want to drop that much money.

Re: what is the best radar?
I would wait a few months and get the new Whistler Pro 78 XRI

Bel RX-65 refurb on eBay. They are sold by the maker, carry a warranty, and are arguably the best performer for the price. They go for about $200. If you are on a big budget, go for the Escort Passport 8500 (NON-X50) which can also be purchased as a refurb from the maker for about $140. Whistler makes a few decent entry models but I do not know enough about them to say too much, but I can say first hand the 8500 and RX-65 are splendid units on todays market.

I got a V1 when I started driving followed by a 9500ix. Getting a good detector is worth it, even though you're 17! IMO, a good detector counts just as much at 17, if not more! From my experience, lots of my friends drove fast *without detectors* in high school and got busted as a result. Expensive ass tickets! My point is that any age is appropriate for a detector. Just keep in mind, it's not a license to speed, but a great investment for any sensible driver.

I agree with Vanman! Tests show that both the 8500 and RX65 refurbs are great performers for the money.
If you can exceed your budget, check out the v1 factory returned for $359. If not, Vanman's choices are great!

Re: what is the best radar?
Thanks for all the pOsts. I am thinking about the v1, my dad has one for his 2009m3 and the arrows are just amazing. For that 350 price range is there any better detector than the v1?

No, nothing is better in that range ($350) than the V1

Re: what is the best radar?
I would agree a refurb RX65 is a lot of bang for the buck. You could also check local big cities on craigslist for used V1s. A lot of people buy a RD and sell it for 1/2 when the novelty wears off. Just be patient. Saving a little money just by going with a cobra is probably going to cost you big time in the end so don't do it.

The only semi-decent detector in that range is the BEL V940. I think you can still get one for around $120.
However, I'll agree with the others - - - save your pennies and get a real detector. Welcome aboard!

Re: what is the best radar?
I just read it to see if you were buying a radar or a radar detector.

Re: what is the best radar?
The best radar, in my opinion is the Stalker DSR.
-
Re: what is the best radar?
I like the Bee 3 myself, followed by the Talon Directional.

Sorry, I meant radar detector. But thanks for all the info now that everyone is telling me it's worth going up in the long run. I'm thinking about going with the v1. Which looks to be around 350-400. If I'm going that high, is there any radar detector you guys believe is better?
-
Re: what is the best radar?
I love my V1. I had a low end Whistler for years; it was a good detector for me, but the V1 is a beast. If you have experience with a V1 and drop to a lower end detector, I think you will be disappointed.
I have never used one, but if I was going to buy a RD for $200 it would be the refurb RX-65. I agree with VanMan. I think this is a really good deal, and honestly, I don't know that anything touches it for another $200+.
The only detectors (not including the $1700 9500ci) that really compete with the V1 are the Redline ($500 or around that), and the STiR+ ($1300?). So if you are willing to spend the $400, the V1 IMO is the winner.

Best radar for $100 is bushnell :D, Ask the cobra driver I got yesterday lol.
There is NO radar detector better in that range. Hell at $400 its the best unless you go up in price, then you gain/lose features.

The new firmware of the V1 just came out and rumor is that it's pretty nasty on K band, even better than the redline. No testing has been done though so we are not sure just yet.

Better or better for the price? I have a better setup, but it costs a lot.

Do people actually "laugh there ass off"? OF course not ! For one this really shouldn't be the place your laughing from and for two if you did that what do you poop with then? SC :)
-
Re: what is the best radar?
as far as the "dead horse" that's pretty silly too. For one this is FAR from a dead horse.
You watch I give some new_lie about three days before you see this posted again,
"What radar do you recommend?"
followed by..
" I saw a cop but my radar didn't go off?" LMPO ! :)

I like your set up. Exactly how I am going to be set up. Except for ham am going to use Kenwood B-2000 with a remote faceplate and Uniden scanner 996 with mobile faceplate. Saving on space. Haven't gotten much into ham yet but can you program CB frequencies and transmit or just receive?

HAM and CB radios are kept separate. I know of only one off hand that does 10m HAM and CB, the Magnum 257 HP.

Re: what is the best radar?
For that price just slow down and save up for something worth having ...Most speeding tickets cost At least 100 bucks
Either that or you will end up paying the money to a cop you pick

Re: what is the best radar?
Thanks again for the advice! I did just place an order on the v1 and will hopefully be getting it sometime early next week. Is there anything special with setup? Obviously they give me the windshield mount and suction cups, but is there anything I need to do with the radar DETECTOR itslef?
And sorry to all those people that were angered by the title, I guess I am a noob when it comes to radar detectors.
-
Re: what is the best radar?
The V1 comes with everything you need like small and large suctions cup, mount, and cig adapter. It also comes with a hardwire kit free of charge. The only thing extra I ordered with my V1 was the hard carry-case. I think is cost me about $30. The V1 should be ready to use right out of the box, but you also have the ability to re-program the factory settings if you wish. I'd recommend that you research the Valentine One section of this site before you change any of the factory setting. Research the pros and cons of having Ka-Gaurd on or off and the new feature for traffic drones since you probably will be getting the new 3.891 firmware version of the V1.

Congrats man! You won't regret it. The V1 will serve you well, and keep you ticket free.
The V1 comes with everything you need. Suction cups, 2 cords and an adaptor along with a hardwire kit. I recommend hardwiring it, so it's not visible for cookie cops to see.
Read the manual for the different settings. Your best bet is A mode for max sensitivity on the highway.

No problem. People are incredibly harsh on newcomers on this site. It sucks. This is not the case for all radar sites, but many of the rude ones are here.

Re: what is the best radar?
I think the best radar is Ka band. My favorite. 34.7 to be exact.
Shaken, not stirred, of course.
-
Re: what is the best radar?
Hopefully you got the V1 from VR. I say this as you are either going to love it or hate it. I have three now and I love them. I say you may hate it as it lacks some features but IMO it is the best overall unit on the market for most driving (UNLESS you drive in the city and in areas with many false alerts in which the Escort 9500ix is the king). Check the Valentine section for info on programming. It comes ready to use out of the box but once you program it yourself, you can reduce false alerts, increase range, and customize it to your surroundings. Good choice!

34.7 is awesome! Probably my favorite, right next to K band.

Most wally worlds use a digital imaging Stanley device for their doors, not Radar.
