Does the V1 have to be hardwired to the savvy? I thought ESP was wireless?
Interesting. Still doesn't help with random k band alerts I get on the highway though, since speeds will generally be higher.
Thats disappointing if thats all it does:(
wait...how does this help us?
Wait, I thought VR didn't care about false alerts. This looks like a rebranded Cheetah.
What? A GPS chip would be cheaper than this and be capable of much more...
Wow what a disappointment if that's all it is...
We waited for 15~ years for this. Mike V must smoke weed. Has too. He is about as motivated as a dope smoker.
I was thinking it would be a good thing. Granted the speed dial in wheel is old style but why put money into hi tech interface when all you need is a simple wheel that you can move by feel. I'm pretty sure once a few of us use this device it will come up tops in functionality and reliability. Cost effective solution for an age old problem for some. I for one will be buying one as soon as I can.
So does this unit mute all signals under the set speed? Or does it just block the X and K band signals?
As I read it, it seems that if you have it set to 55mph, and are still driving around the city, you can come across a potential threat that can be muted and ignored.
I find it funny how people always want to complain about VR. Everyone needs to calm down. Bigger and better things are coming for the V1. Savvy is just the beginning. I'll get one. I know Mike will come through for his customers. He always does.
That's it? SAVVY...big name, very little product. I was hoping that it would integrate with a navigation device like garmin/tomtom.
So... Um, as I stated VR is out of the radar detector business... still getting beat by segmented M3's, still nothing new. (As DJ mentioned, this is like a cheetah knock-off, and it's even worse when it comes to false negatives than Belscorts way of doing things!)
I literally almost fell asleep reading this description.
It should have the slogan: "Prepared to be underwhelmed!"
At least if that was the case, it would deliver on something.
You got that right. Of course everybody is an expert. I'm looking forward for reviews by people that have actually used this device. GPS is one way to skin the cat and uniden where using it long before Belscourt http://www.uniden.co.nz/RESOURCES_MA.../GPS9000NZ.pdf. I'm not into it just because the possibility of missing cops. Also GPS devices (not saying Radar detectors) are notorious for crapping out. Looks like VR have long jeopardy in mind for this device. You know you got easy hard wiring, muting up to whatever speed for under $70 and people still give them sh!t and they haven’t even used it! For real
Off course it's just my opinion, I never claimed it was otherwise?
It just is very lackluster. It would have been great technology back 10 years ago... but not anymore. Just an old way of thinking, just like VR.
As for GPS products cr@pping out: You are buying the wrong GPS products. GPS products are insanely simple devices (relatively speaking)... so if it's breaking it's cheap /discussion there. I know many "early adapters" of GPS units in-car that are near a ~decade old, and their unit still work like a charm. You're just reaching for something if you think GPS cr@ps out often.
I am not excited at all about the product. Speed sensitive muting doesn't appeal to me...I suppose I just don't get it.
AirMoore, you are funny. I am sure there is a good reason why GPS isn't being used. I am sure it's the same exact reason that Escort hasn't had arrows and a real threat counter while V1 has had it for going on 20 years now.
So when is it going to be available? I want to order one.
Remember when the Iphone 4S was released and how "underwhelmed" people were about it. That is, until they got their hands on one to actually try it out. The sales records broke the records of the iPhone 4.
Truly Amazing what people complain about and what they feel they are entitled to!
I don't understand why people think savvy is the furthest ESP integration will go. The developments that OBD-II integration allows are pretty astounding.
I say wait. There is more to come.
Oh I agree. Savvy is extremely underwhelming to the point of me actually being angry at myself for getting excited over it. Should have expected such hype for such a pointless product. While it's cool... I guess; It's way too late and anyone who wanted a quiet city detector already has a 9500ix.
ESP integration would be great if some aftermarket developers were allowed to develop products based on it.
I'll end up getting the product as soon as it comes out, just because it's fairly cheap and the hard wiring is a winner however I've already got me car hard wired. Although I'm no expert about what Saavy is...so can someone explain to me what are the potential of this product and integrated with the V1?
Maybe Valentine is clinging on to the enthusiasts who still have faith in the future of the company. I mean $80 for an upgrade from a new V1 bought less than 6 months ago? I hope I'm not right about this, it's just the way the last few years have unfolded in the industry. Cobra's going down the drain, Escort engulfed Beltronics. Valentine is standing in the way of Belscort from total domination. I feel like its Apple vs. Android. They never lead, always follow (band segmentation, etc).
It's easy to bm and rage over Savvy, but please don't take this as one. This isn't bm, it's just my rant and work is currently mind-numbing -__-... I had hoped that Savvy was some form of Escort Live or Radar Active (V1 dedicated and which is awesome!) It would cost about the same to get the Radar Active module to Savvy. So V1 fans, don't be bummed, you can always get that instead =)
I'm not the most educated person on Savvy so I feel kind of stupid for posting this (ready for the bm, keep me entertained at work!), but it's a slightly different perspective... i think. Regardless of this, there's still a bit track left on this coaster and I'll definitely ride it out. ^_^
The only benefits of tapping into the OBDII port I can see are what Savvy provides..........a +12v power source and vehicle speed information. Speed info can be used to set a threshold for alerts to relieve you from hitting that mute button under a preset speed (which Savvy does) and a few other things which Savvy doesn't do.
For instance, Belscort's GPS detectors can display your speed so there is only one thing you have to look at when your detector goes off and some (like the iQ or Escort Live enabled) will alert you when you are over the posted speed limit.
So there is not a whole lot of potential by tapping into the OBDII alone, and I think alot of us were expecting some type of smartphone connection or alternate display to go along with this OBDII connection. I have to believe that is the case since Valentine went through so much trouble with the ESP protocol update..........but you never know.
It's just very frustrating to wait so long and then get this by itself in the Savvy rollout.
As a computer engineer I was excited to read about this upgrade. It's actually a cool feature, I'm 99 percent sure there is some type of microprocessor in there that is required to pull data off of the ODB CAN network to decode it; it's not as simple as it sounds. And providing a convenient, clean, effortless way to hard-wire power is a huge plus.
Anyone know how this interacts with powering the car on and off (like will it kill power to the V1 with the engine off, or would you have to manually turn on/off the V1?)
Nine,
While the OBD2 power is not switched power, the Savvy does turn off the V1 when the engine is shut off.
I'd have to be an acrobat to reach and read it in my ride, and besides the Cheetah mirror is easier to adjust.
Yeah, just saw that on Valentine's website. So the little black box does act like a switchable source..........thats cool.
Looking at the install pics there is no way you adjust this thing once installed and it has to re-boot every time it's plugged / unplugged. At least Valentine admits that the design really does not lend itself to adjustments on the fly.........just pick one speed for all occasions and there you have it.
Thanks for pointing that out.
That sucks, I'd rather not have my unit shut off when I shut off the car.
LEO Switchbox > Savvy. (For power connections).
Care to explain this one, in the provided picture, it shows the direct connection with the port having the dial for the speed set into it. So... not sure what you mean by your statement that you can mount it wherever you want, if wherever you want is directly where your port is?
You bet. There are literally thousands of OBD2 extension cables/ribbons and adapters out there. They even have 90 degree and flip adapters for the ports. The upside to doing this if you have a difficult to access place is that if you wish, you can relocate your OBD2 port completely to a location of your liking. For example, some models have the port facing down towards the floor and directly above the brake pedal. That means if you plug anything into the port, even a 90 degree adapter, you may have interference with your legs/feet. Simply removing the port from the bracket, installing an extension cable, and locating the other end to the location of your preference has benefits.
Baseless? Ten bucks for a cable. Real big expense there. And it adds the benefit of allowing diagnostic tools and other data port items to be easily accessed.
I can literally move and relocate a DLC in about 20 minutes on even the most hard to access ones.
