don't waste your $......
LOL @ being almost as expensive as a V1.
Bet that an SE Whistler still kicks its ass.
looks cool
I don't think the screen on that thing will alert LEOs behind you that you're running a radar detector and to play/hit you with I/O, no sir not at all, especially at night.
I've kept my 9960 high mounted in front of my visor on two cars now and it has yet to get any interest from LEOs. I'll be interested to see if the range is actually "30%" better. My 9960g's always seemed comparable to my v955.
If the range is improved 30% from the flagship models then it would be competitive in a lower price bracket. I'm certain that these will be able to be had for a lower price than what is offered on their website soon enough. I have the 9960G and have found it to be a competent radar detector for the 150-200 price bracket.
Read my latest review of the misleading advertising here: Cobra Vedetta Radar Detector Marketing Scam? | RadarDetector.org
Tisk Tisk Roy........you know how this goes, being a marketing guy yourself. You slam the competition for their set of frivolous features, while at the same time, promoting your favorite brands which have their own set of frivolous non-value add features.
How long did Escort/Beltronics have Ku band detection on their products and still a POP feature (Ka only) that makes the detector totally false happy and unuseable? BTW.......you STILL have those erroneous test results of the Bel/Escorts detecting 16ms K-Band POP (an impossibility since they don't have K-Band POP detection) on your website.
Why not throw your benefactors at Bel/Escort under the bus, while you're at it, for still having SWS on many of their new products? How much is that used here in the US (or anywhere in the world for that matter)?
Of course the real issue is how well does this new Cobra detect radar? We'll dispense with the smear tactics and deal with actual performance characteristics and test results shortly.
Just received a Cobra Vedetta SLR 650G for a Christmas present! Here's some thoughts on it so far:
1. Overall appearance: is nice, well built, totally different!
2. Mounting has to be the best! Suction cup is sticky and can be renewed with water. It's hard to get off even with the lever opened. As with all GPS style mounts a little shaking is normal but not anymore than a standard mount. Whistler, Cobra, and V1 has the best standard mounts. Escort's suck, because cups loose suction ability after a short time. I've been through a lot of sets of their cups. Escort's bracket is okay, it's their cups I don't like. Anyway, mounting can be anywhere now with this new type. I still like mine in the middle as low as possible. I leave the display flipped up and angled towards the driver's position. It looks like a GPS unit so most POs won't notice it unless they look hard. So you have a little stealth in a way of appearance wise.
3. Power cord is a straight cord. It's nice for longer reaches. I have a short reach so I just wrapped the extra length up in a "bow tie" with the twist tie included and run the lighter plug end through the open end of the "bow tie" to hold the cord in place or to hang it on.
4. Volume is a little lower than I like it would be when it is on maximum. So you might have a hard time hearing it with radio up.
5. Brightness is great. You have to dim it manually. It has several positions to suit any lighting situations. If you have a signal and hit the dim pad it goes dark with just a faint view only you can see. Which is nice I think, if you want to go stealth during an alert.
6. GPS locks on very quickly. Updates are a flash. It comes with a self coiling cord. So you can take your laptop out to the car or bring the unit in with you. I think the Module on the XRS 9970G better. It is easier but I don't like it sticking out like it does.
7. Cobra dropped POP, VG2, Spectre, Safety and Strobe alerts on these series. I think this is a great move since it makes the unit more noisy anyway. Safety and Strobe alerts I did get legit sources on my XRS 9970G though but not with any real benefit. Also gone is the "# of Bands" theme. Which is good. This unit has X, K, Ka, Ku, Laser bands only. It tells the frequency of Ka of only the police bands only. Laser it tells the PPS.
8. Setup is a snap and the screen is great at guiding you. It's not a whole touch screen, just along the sides at certain points. I would like the whole screen to be. It's a little challenging to touch those spots on the move. Not hard at all but could be easier. One good thing is you won't get the whole screen smudged up this way.
9. Screen has different color schemes to match any vehicle, a real nice touch! The clarity of the screen is like a LCD or LED TV.
10. GPS functions are great. Split screen feature is nice when receiving radar/laser alerts along with GPS alerts.
11. GPS compass and speed are accurate. Speed might be 1-3 miles off at times but otherwise great.
12. I like the standby screen telling you the Heading, Speed, Voltage, H/C mode and Intellimute features. A lot of info at once.
13. Intellimute feature is great. I set mine when vehicle is warmed up so idle drops as low as it goes with all accessories and lights off. Then when you come to a stop with your brakes on, the idle drops a little lower to activate the Intellimute. So you won't be bothered at intersections or lights with alert sounds. I have a manual transmission, automatics set it in the park position. Then when you put it in drive your rpms will drop a little lower with foot on brake. Make sure your engine is at operating temperature so idle is low as it will be before you set it. Some cars or trucks have a hard time setting it. If yours is one of these. Just set it with foot on brake and in gear at operating temp. If none of the above works set it with engine off. You can also just turn it off too. But I usually get it to work with the above examples.
14. City modes are: City X, City X,K, City X,K,Ka, City Max
You can read the manual on these. I'm not sure on City Max what it does. If anybody knows let me know? (I think it blocks all audio signals including laser until a signal strength of 2 or more.) The manual could be a little more detailed.
15. Range is like my XRS 9970G so far. I need more experience with it.
More later!
I got a new electric razor :(
:D
More Info on the Cobra SLR 650G:
1. Regards to the GPS feature adding a Speed trap compared to the XRS 9970G. Once added, I like the 650G better because it warns you with a change in size and color of the warning as you approach and leave the location. The 9970G just gives you a speed trap warning with no knowledge of your distance to the location.
2. The range seems to be improved a lot on Ka, a little more on K, and about the same on X.
3. Ka false alerts seems to be a little more on X and K door openers (harmonics) due to sensitivity increases. It could be from legit sources but I did not ID any. I received a K alert stopped at a light. Thought it was the Walgreen's or CVS. Some of the alerts were from them. Then I started getting increasing bars and full blasts of K with a few small alerts of K. I thought it might be reflections off some turning traffic. But then I kept getting full blasts of K off and on then continuously. I thought this is definitely something legit. I was thinking where the heck is he! Looking behind, nothing. Light turned green and started going, K is full blast now. Then I ID him oncoming opposite my direction. (I've seen that car before running continuous mode all the time.) The breaks in full blasts were from the traffic I think. Sensitivity was reel good on K, IMO. As far as Ka, I had some PO cars I passed or drove by with no peep. I was wandering about them having their radar on or a problem with the SLR? I'm still evaluating Ka band. I did receive one legit hit on a continuous mode Ka 34.7. It was a good distance same as with the 9970G. I'm not running them together though. Just using my past experiences as a guide. I'm liking it more & more. The screen is a big plus!
More later!
Are you sure it wasn't a car? That radar collision avoidance or whatever it is seems to react that way on my 9960. Makes following newer Audis a PITA. Doesn't happen w my Escort, though...
More on my SLR 650G:
1. When receiving "Caution Area" alerts, I noticed you don't get a distance reading on the green and orange circles like the 9970G. You have your speed shown where the 9970G doesn't show it. "Speed Trap" areas your speed is shown also where the 9970G doesn't show it.
2. Ka band alerts: so far I received 34.7 and 35.5 from behind and oncoming. The range is great, a little bit better than the 9970G. From behind I received at two different times a constant-on alert on (34.7 & 35.5). It kept going and going and I was wandering where the heck is he? Then I seen him closing in on me. That's what radar does from behind. Got some falses on 33.8, 34.3, 34.9 which are from other detectors.
3. I like the dark feature when a PO is coming from behind with an alert showing you press the brightness pad and it goes almost dark where only you can see it. If no alert it just sets your brightness levels.
4. Again, I wish the manual was more detailed.
5. It's different not having all the extra alerts (POP, VG2, Spectre, Safety & Strobe). Which I said is a good thing. I notice it seems to false more on Ka band due to sensitivity increases.
6. Still not sure what "City Max" does? If anybody knows let, me know? I'm still testing it. I think it blocks all bands including laser till a certain level. I usually run mine on "City X,K"
7. Setting a LBA (Land Base Alerts) is a little harder than the 9970G. You have to hold the menu/save for about 2 seconds. I have to pinched the pad with my thumb and first finger because trying to just touch it is hard for two seconds while moving. That's why I would like to see a full touch screen like the 9970G.
8. I noticed I haven't gotten any plain Ka and Laser alerts (with no frequency or pps) like with the 9970G yet. It's always been with a frequency or pps reading.
More Later!
What are land based alerts? I own a 9970G and I don't know what those are... :P
You have to manually set the 9970G to display the Feq. They probably took that option out since most RDs now show the freq by default.
"Land Base Alerts" are alerts you set yourself for example: Caution Areas, Speed Traps, Cameras, User Alerts. They did take the option of turning the frequency display off. On my 9970G I would see just a Ka alert once in while without the frequency meaning it's not a police frequency used. I haven't had that happened yet on my SLR650G.
Ah yes. I do have a few complaints about the LBAs. For one, considering there is an 8-point compass on the thing, speed traps should only be enabled when set on a certain heading. This way, speed trap only alerts when going into one, not out. Also, I find it hard to set red light camera intersections. It's not very accurate and anything short of coming to a stop in the middle of an intersection and setting it, you will get the alert too early or too late. Just my two cents.
Yes there's an 8 point compass and it works off the GPS. I always set my "Speed Traps" from the position they're heading and/or my heading. I always have good results with them. Your alerts will depend on your speed. (Faster will give you more distance. Slower less distance.) The SLR650G will give you a clue whether your coming or departing the speed trap which I like better than the 9700G which doesn't. Red light cameras and Caution Areas work the same way which I don't have an issue with either.
More on the Cobra SLR 650G:
1. I can't believe the range from behind! It's definitely a big improvement. It picks up as though it's from the front. Ka 34.7 picks up a long way off. It locks on quick to a source.
2. Ka false alerts more do to sensitivity increases. But otherwise easy to ferret out the real ones.
3. I think this is the best ever Cobra! A lot of thought went into this! I've owned a lot of detectors out there, and I like this best out of all them.
4. Recommendations I make for this detector, you can read my earlier threads on this thread.
Anymore info I'll post later.
keep them coming. I enjoy your postings on the new detector.
just wanted to clue you in to this find.
cobra has even more new detectors coming out.

1. I had a good hit on Ka 35.5 range was good! It was long enough, I wondering where he was at. He was coming towards me opposite direction with constant on.
2. I finally got just a Ka reading with no frequency. It don't happened as much as my 9970G did. It was a short lived false alert.
3. I know when it alerts to Ka, I pay close attention!
4. No laser alerts yet. I tested it with a remote control and it read Laser with 330 pps.
More later!
keep them coming MDR. I enjoy reading them all. :)
just to add a few of my recent experiences with this detector. I have gotten two nice off axis receptions from the detector lately. Both were in nearly the same spot. They were 90 degree receptions of good strength with the police car ticketing his victims and leaving his detector on.
I was a bit worried about it's off axis being that it a more narrowfocus model till I finally saw these two radar receptions !
Very nice indeed. :)
Some more experiences with the Cobra Vedetta SLR 650G:
1. I've noticed when it is real cold out, the detector switches between City and Highway modes by itself after a few minutes after I turn it on. I usually just turn it off then back on and it takes care of it. I thought maybe the film on the touch pad from your fingers might be causing it too with the low temperature changes.
2. The range continues to be good on Ka, especially 34.7!
3. False alerts still happened on Ka when it is a K band signal from door openers.
4. GPS alerts are nice!
5. Still not sure all what City Max does. I know it filters X band till 3 bars signal strength, K & Ka till 2 bars. Same as City X,K,KA. I think it also filters Ku till 2 bars. I don't think it decreases sensitivity on any bands.
6. Volume could be a little louder. Radar Alerts not bad, GPS Alerts could be louder.
More Later!
Nice to see you posting again MDR ! The screen needs to be kept pretty clean or the capacitance touch switches can switch between modes sometime. That is what I found. :)
I have been enjoying my detector very very much. I have been getting some amazing off axis receptions lately. Very sensitive detector and picks up I/O very very well !
Here's another observation on the Cobra Vedetta SLR650G:
The Intellimute feature (the Arrow) stays muted or unmuted (Down or Up) when it has a signal. Then it will change after signal is released. For example: When your arrow is DOWN while your stopped at a light the sound will be muted. Then while you take off when light changes the arrow should change UP and the sound should be unmuted. But it doesn't till it drops the current signal. Then it will unmute. It does the same in reverse too. (Unmuted sound to Muted sound.) My 9700G works like it should but this one doesn't. So you might be careful using this feature on this model. I was stopped at a light picking up K band from door openers, arrow was down so sound was muted. I started moving then arrow should have moved up. I was still picking up k band, then it locked on Ka from a real cop but sound stayed muted till I passed cop and the signal stopped then the arrow changed to up position.
More later!
thanks for the info. Isn't that interesting. :) Did you know OUR rd can be had for 168 dollars now at shop nbc I want to cry ! :(
The fact that there are only two threads under this forum heading says it all. Cobra should stick with CB's.
Spoken like a true cobra basher. What a complete surprise
Many people here that have attempted to give their own successful use of the brand positive posts over time in the cobra section just have given up because of childish trolling like yours sadly.
Bashers will bash and haters will hate
Cobra's have gotten a lot of bad press over the years and at one time it was pretty well earned when super wide band ka band came out.
A lot of manufacturers had similar problems at that time but cobra seemed to take ages and ages correcting them.
Newer cobra detector while starting with the last series have improved immensely.
while maybe not having the absolute sensitivity of the top ended Bell/Escort and v1's can still perform a creatable job at a much lower price.
to be even more specific on this particular Cobra thread very few people are aware of this particular detector or any high end cobra because cobra's aren't advertised in car magazines like the bell/escort and v1 are.
too bad because I've found the recent strip-line L/N versions to be a excellent values
something the cheaper whistlers still don't have across the board like Cobra is doing
further here is a thread from our competing forum on someone that recently tested a newer Cobra he got for cheap just on a lark
Cobra XRS-888 - Page 3 - Radar Detector &Laser Jammer Forum=
the bashing pretty well disappeared after his results were posted as you see. :D
I never use intell-mute pro or the pop/spectre mode as I don't need to and they are more bother then any help but the Intellimute I use constantly and it's a very nice feature indeed.
Buck... You should work for them. Why not get paid for promoting a brand you obviously think is super dooper out of this world fantastic! Let's not inject emotion into this. Let's just stick with the facts. Where does cobra fall in the GOL testing results? Since at the end of the day this is all that truly matters. Who saves your bacon.
Enjoy your cobra's.
PS. You are welcome to have the last word.... I'll expect no less that 3 responses from you telling us why cobras are the greatest radar detectors ever created.
Heard it all before. If someone actually has the nerve to stick up for Cobra whatsoever they must work for or should work for Cobra.
GOL testing? Are you serious? That group is LONG deceased pal.
Too much internal bickering did it in.
Never impressed me when it was still kicking either.
never mind that latest recent test I posted for you from a non-partisan RD owner comparing his Red-line to a Cobra and not even a top line model at that.
It might skew your already preconceived opinions about the brand and we wouldn't want that now would we?
