Police Forum - Radar Detectors

What we need to remember is that we are not your average RD users. Not only do we have the best RD availible but we know how to use them and mount them better then the rest of the people out there. We all know that when you get a few short blips of ka and then nothing there could still be a IO trap ahead. Most people have no clue. Saw one guy the other week who had a x50 mounted almost perpendicular to the road pointing into the sky. we must remember we are not your average user and what LEO know about RD they learn form others less experienced then us.

Excellent point Carter!!! The ones the LEOs are catching are probably VERY inexperienced users, or users using subpar equipment that isn't offering the best of protection. With RDs, you definitely get what you pay for.

Well, it is illegal to use a RD where I live, so I'm breaking the law just by having one powere on before I even get close to the flow of traffic, which is always 15-20 mph above the PSL. Do I feel like a criminal? Never.

Once in a blue moon I'll take the car or bike into the triple digits, but only when the road is near empty and others are doing it ahead of me in sunny and dry conditions. In that case, I doubt a RD would help me much and I wouldn't have much of an excuse if pulled over. But the BS stuff I have been pulled over for - no front license plate and a loud muffler most recently - are not the kind of things that make me feel especially guilty. And seeing the tax collectors hide in unmarked cars or running speed traps reinforces my belief that speed enforcement has absolutely nothing to so with safety and everything to do with revenue.

Well as being former a LEO, I can see both sides of the story but any real police officer does not take any factors other than what is presented to him/her at that time to make a decision on weather or not to take action...

Ticketing a RD user simply because he has an RD is unethical and illegal, basically is the same as discrimination or profiling, now if the person was committing some type of infraction if it be speeding or any other infraction that should not be taken into consideration unless RD are illegal or where intent can be proven in a case where excessive speeding or reckless driving which should be proven in court not at the traffic stop.

Now where they quote "intent" I can see that being done, but there must be more supporting factors other than just speeding unless the speeding can be classified as reckless or careless driving, police officers cannot be judge and jury. He/she cannot escalate a minor infraction into something larger without supporting facts simply because said person has a RD, a RD wouldn't qualify by itself unless it was illegal to use..


But on the police officers side, specially ones who run traffic detail will tell you a person with a nice sports car stopped for speeding will get a ticket. Most officers I know will write for 10 over no matter what car make, RD or not.. But I've rode with others that will let some go, where a fast car did get a ticket..

If a person was pulled over for say 11mph over, I can see where a nice car and RD will get you a ticket.. The officers theory behind this and I've seen it stand up in court, where the officer stated in court that is the subject had a RD and I still got him at 11mph over it's probable the subject was going much faster than 11 mph over..

Never the less 11 over is 11 over, and it's the officers full right to ticket the subject.

In the short time I did traffic most of the offenders we stopped would get a ticket with or without a RD, but we usually didn't write for anything under 10 highway speeds and 7 for city speeds above 40, RD or not. But we did stop for less than the "grace limit" usually 5 over, but normally let go with a verbal warning, unless school zone then there was zero tolerance. The only exception is where a misdemeanor citation or arrest was made and that only relates to speed "grace limit".. For instance pulled over for 8 mph over suspended license etc, you'd get the 8 over speeding ticket with your state citation or arrest.

Somewhere in there I saw a reference to radar and radar detectors being as a "game". This is not a COP vs PUBLIC, and anyone who relates this to a "game" is seriously mistaken... When you have to clean up someones blood or guts off the roadway or tell some parent or next of kin IN PERSON their loved one was injured or killed because they were going to fast or the result of someone else going to fast. It will make you realize that it's more for safety, if it doesn't make you puke first.

Most people don't see that part, the see having to pay fines or it's a quota thing. I'm not saying that quota's don't exist but under the public eye anymore many departments don't use them. However most departments do track citation for officer performance and evaluation only.

Sorry for the rant :) but not all cops feel like they are above everyone else

^ Well, put, and yes, on-rotation, I also saw enough to make me think twice any time I tip into the happy pedal.

But you did leave out one scenario - what if you don't speed, and indeed use the detector and other countermeasures on a hobbyist basis?

In-town (as well as even on open-highways where there's a construction zone, accident scene, enforcement pull-over, etc.), honestly and truthfully, I'd be happy to give a reach-around to any enforcer who nabs me for speeding. :wink: :lol: I just don't do it, and there's more than one reason why - and in such cases, I do see my use of such countermeasures as a "game."

It's a "game" of "hey, I see you!"

As an automotive enthusiast who likes to drive, my viewpoint is that driving is not a game - it's a privilege, and the dangers with it come at any speed, at any time.

We're piloting multi-ton steel projectiles. Instant death.

Respect should be given accordingly, no matter what the speed, no matter what the activity.

And as for the "cat-and-mouse" of detection versus countermeasures? The word "game," I think, may be used to describe the interactions between the two, even including what the industry is doing - but care, as you well pointed out, should be taken to understand that there's a greater context going on which one should not take lightly. :) I guess calling the 80s Cold-War Arms Race a "game" is a bit too filppant, too, though, and I do see your point, 10-8! :)

I can't remember the last time I saw a const. zone where there were actually any workers there. I mean, 6:00am on a Sunday - is it really necessary to slow down to 45 mph on I-95 in Delaware where there are const. zone signs, but no workers and no lane closures or shifts? I think const. zones are actually union zones.
