Newbie seeking advice - Hong Kong (but general questions)

I got an X50 already. It only gives at most 5 seconds warning on the multanova photo radars.

Nvr2fast: What ways to tweak it? I've disabled X band.

I really want to know, is K band still used in HK? i know HK only uses multanovas and lasers. And multanova's only function on KA band, therefore it shoudl be safe to disable X and K, right?

According to the distributor (handphone +852 9032 5520, cantonese), Ka is predominantly used. There is only one K camera and it rotates between 10 compatible boxes on the Tolo Highway. X band is not used. Lasers are occasionally used.

I drive with X off and K off.

How did you find this info?

When I bought my X50 from Very Good Sound and Accessory Co, Shantung St, M.K. (HK$3,200), they provided this technical support number. The guy was really helpful and gave me all these details. I can't 100% vouch for them, but I haven't noticed anything inconsistent with these suggested settings.

Hi - I'm a newbie here, also from Hong Kong, and also looking for a radar detector.

I am getting different recommendations from friends, including the V1, Passport 8500 X50, and the Bel RX65. I am suspecting that they all perform on about the same level but I have a few questions:

1. Is the Ku band useful for Hong Kong?

2. Someone told me I only need Ka and laser so the one that gives best Ka range is best. Is this correct? (and which one would that be)?

3. I think Roy does not sell the V1, so if I order either the 8500 or RX65 from him, will the parcel get confiscated by customs when it arrives in Hong Kong? As a law abiding citizen :twisted: I am of course intending to accurately declare the content of the parcel.

4. Oh, and a friend uses the Escort SRX, and he said it saved his skin a few times but the range is not that great - probably because of the position of the antenna on the front grill rather than the wind-screen?

I am no expert, but here is what I was told:

Ka covers 90% hits (all boxes except Tolo and most roadside tripods)
K band is only supported in fixed boxes on Tolo Highway
Laser is sporadically used for mobile tripods

Never heard of Ku band radar.

I have heard from many people that RDs are now legal. Many shops openly sell them. My RD has been seen my many cops and none have ticketed me.

V1 is sold here in HK, as is Bell, Escort, Rocky M and others. I'm going to pick up my V1 today!

Yes, I think it was quite publicised that RD's (as long as they are not jammers) are not illegal in Hong Kong.

If Ku band is not used, then I wonder whether the Bel STi is best because it is "newest" and I read somewhere that STi's Ka range and filtering are better?

My concern is still whether HK Customs is going to give me problems when I import a RD. Any experience with that?

I assume that is something is not illegal to possess and use, then it ought not to be illegal to import, especially as imported machines are readily available.

In the old days, before the legality was clarified, RDs used to be sold with labels saying "for export only". i.e. you could possess them but not use them.

But to answer your question directly, no, I don't know for a fact if they are legal to import, or if in practical terms you will encounter any trouble at the airport. You are best off calling customs to check.

I read on radarbusters.com that the STi was tested and found to have better ka band range than the X50 and V1. I have not personally tested these claims.

Hi all,

Thought this might be a useful piece of information.

I have made enquiries with Hong Kong's Customs & Excise, and also with OFTA and the Police about importing radar detectors. Customs and Police referred the enquiries to OFTA, and OFTA confirmed that if I import either a X50, RX65 or V1, there are no specific requirements / difficulties. I simply need to declare the content of the parcel as normal.

I have specifically sent them the specs of the X50, RX65 and V1 so they can see what these are, and what frequencies they operate on.

Now I am going to check about the Euro version Beltronics 550.
