That's because LIDAR uses a narrow beam. A plate shot from 100 feet away doesn't leave a lot of scatter for a detector to pick up. Contrary to radar or LED based IR, LIDAR is easier to detect from longer distances as the beam spreads out. Assuming your tester uses a LED, it would emit a wider, albeit weaker, signal. That's why I was wondering what kind of detection range you've seen with your tester on a X50, or Bel or something other than the V1.
