JTW's Laser Tester--a useful tool and tailgating deterrent

RDs are illegal for truckers ... laser jammers are not except in states whey're they're banned to begin with.

I do agree with slowing down tailgating rigs, I think most speed limits could be higher for cars but an 18-wheeler speeding really is dangerous ... a trucker friend told me it takes 1/4 mile to come to a full stop at 65 mph. Picture a dragstrip ... that's 1/4 ... that's really really long to stop.

Well, I know if I were flying down the highway, had a laser alert, slammed the breaks and got that adrenaline rush, looked over and saw some wanker with a laser tester pointed at me laughing, I would not be a happy camper. In fact, I'd be liable to have a little bout of road rage, and I'm SURE I'm not the only one!

That's why truckers shouldn't tailgate... and drivers shouldn't cut in front of big rigs. They need plenty of room.

What kind of range does JTW's tester have? Would it trigger an average (non-V1) detector from 50-100 feet away when aimed out the back window of a car?

It all depends on the detector of course. Keep in mind that when I used a REAL laser gun to test the laser sensitivity of the top 3 only the V1 alerted to a headlight and license plate shot 100 feet away. The other detectors didn't alert.

That's because LIDAR uses a narrow beam. A plate shot from 100 feet away doesn't leave a lot of scatter for a detector to pick up. Contrary to radar or LED based IR, LIDAR is easier to detect from longer distances as the beam spreads out. Assuming your tester uses a LED, it would emit a wider, albeit weaker, signal. That's why I was wondering what kind of detection range you've seen with your tester on a X50, or Bel or something other than the V1.

If you look at my testers light reflection off of the license plate in night vision the beam isn't that wide.
