Default Thinking about buying my first detector

    Hi,

I was wondering what would be a good detector for me to get. I drive a 93 chevy corsica and do not drive as fast as Donut Patrol does but i do like to stay witht the flow of traffic which is most of the time 10 over the PSL. I live in NC which is nortorious for their speed laws. I am a college student so i cannot afford to spend much money on a detector. I do mostly highway driving since i have a co-op position in charlotte nc and i live near the rocky mount area. So i was wondering what would be a good detector to use when i am traveling back home to visit or to have when i am taking trips to different states. I am looking at the Whistler and the V1 but the Whistler cost half of what the V1 cost.

If you can afford $400.00, then you ought to look into the V1.

The Whistler is (less than) half the cost of a V1, and the V1 is less than half the cost of a ticket (including insurance jumping in price)... spring for the V1.

With that said, if you REALLY can't swing it for a V1 (I understand being the poor college student).

My two favorite intro units I suggest:

Id vouch for a V955 from RadarBusters... it is less than half the cost of the V1... and it is what I generally buy people as a gift for their first RD.
It may lack some features, and not have the premier detection of the top units (V1+M3 Belscorts), but it is darn close and darn consistent for the price, and if the people don't use them that much, I'm not really offended.

Also a refurb 8500 is another way to go... you'll have to make sure you do your own research (simple search) to get that unit from the only authorized people.

-Also: Whistler units are decent, and members have had success, but I prefer the aforementioned two units.

since your more of a speed of traffic kind of guy and not really a speeder then I would say keep it easy and simple and go with the Beltronics Vector 995, if you don't mind spending a few extra bucks go for the 8500 x50, if these are still out of your price range, shoot me a PM and we can work out a discount of some sort

I use the guys of lidar site as my main source of info along with this site. I heard that their is a couple of problems with the Whistlers that might get solved soon so i might wait until then.

Whistler is very underated in my opinion. They don't look good on paper or charts but the truely shine in the REAL WORLD. I say June or July Whistler will have another detector to be released

There are always going to be newer radar detectors coming out and out dating the older models. These specific detectors are still widely used and found to work great. There are even older models then these, that you may not be able to buy but by people who purchased them when they first came out still use.
