Oh, so it's kind of like frequency hopping?
Yeah, Like in my city. They have 20 frequencies, you just enter these into the scanner (following the manual for trunked systems) Then find what specific channels you want to listen to and enter these in. It is there ID number. For example my city is broke into 5 sections N E S W and Central. I just want to scan the North Region so I entered its code 2992.
With my scanner, once the person talks I can hit a button to see which freq they are on. If there is a break in their conversation a new frequency might appear but same conversation with same ID number. It depends on if that freq was being used after the initial converstaion.
If you were to just scan one of the 20 freq's you would here non stop chatter but would not be able to follow the conversation because once the key their mic down it will switch freq's.
If the system info says it is Motorola APCO-25 Common Air Interface then it is digital. If it says Analog and APCO-25 Common Air Interface then some of the talk groups are digital and some are analogue. To determine which are digital, look for the letter next to the talk group labeled "mode". If it says D it is digital, if it says A it is analogue. If the system is EDACS with ProVoice then you can not monitor is using any scanner available today.
