Getting your technicians license is pretty easy to get. Several of Uniden's analog scanners have BearTracker, which hears the transmission of the officer (usually within 3 miles on the stock antenna).
Yeah you can get a technician ticket in a week or less. Writtens are easy.
A week, the test only took me about 15 minutes.

I'm not talking about how long it takes someone to take the actual test. You're at the mercy of two factors - your prexisting knowledge and how long it takes for you to be able to pass the test (It's probably a lot easier now than when I had to take it) and how long you have to wait to take the test at a designated FCC session.
