Whistler Reviews ??? hmm

Maybe low end is not a good word to use but these are terms that we have established here on this board and will continue to use them.
Just as we use the term falsing when a radar detector gives us a NON Leo alert such as a alarm or automatic door openers. Even though the detector detected the correct frequency it was not from a radar device so we use the term falsing to describe a NON Leo alert.

Do not get so hung up on the terms we use here. We are not that politically correct here :lol:

I have no problem with you and your views about Whistler and if you want to call them a mid unit that is fine with me.

I might beat up on Whistler from time to time but I know Whistler makes a good unit for the money and I do recommend them for people who do not want to spend a lot of money. Whistler's customer service seems to be one of the best in the radar industry and that goes a long way!!

thanks boomerman that is a great reply and is what I wanted to hear you say. So i apperciate it a whole lot. :D and I agree 100% I appericate your modding the whistler forum. I think we can all hope that the new XTR radar detector makes a good sell especially with the new features added to it. Voice recording for the radar bands etc. And with it rumor to have KU band this will make it a even better sell.

Yes I think it is great that Whistler has now included the KU band detection on these new units.
As far as better performance we will have to wait and see, but from what Mike B. from Whistler told me these are being built to the same specs as the Pro Series so this would make me think that there will be no performance increase. But who really knows until we can get our hands on these models.
As soon as they come available I will be buying one of the XTR models to add to my collection.

For me, my "low end" Whistler is more than enough to cover my driving habits. I get plenty of advance warning on the cops in our area (constant on Ka, mostly).

If Whistler is "low end", and it may be compared to the MONSTROUS range of the top 3, then we need to make an "ultra low range" for the pathetically low reach of Cobras, where the Ka alert on my 9300 has never risen above 2/5, even when a local college's police officer (a friend of mine) held a constant-on Ka gun 1 foot in front of it. (though I still get ~1-2 block warning on it @ 1/5).


The LIDAR capabilities of Whistler seems to be unusually good (as with the Cobras, apparently). My friend said the next time he has a LIDAR unit and isn't busy, we can do some testing.

Hey some testing on the whistler on lidar would be great. A true independent test with no biases would be awesome. If you could test it in the fashion of it being able to pick up scatter from other cars or near road signs and direct mid range distance shots. I have encounter these in the real world and its amazing what whistler picksup. I have high confidence in it lifting some eyes.

Before you could count on it to pick up "scatter", it would need to be able to consistently detect when the vehicle it's mounted in is targeted:

I used to have my whistler 73 right up under my rearview and when me and Dave tested it out with the Ultralyte and LA ( since they are the more trickier guns to catch any scatter and any slim hope of warning), it didnt detect consistent below from 1000 to 300ft (below that no alert), so Dave gave me a wise tip to mount it lower closer to the dash, and that was a MAJOR improvement. For the direct targeting, it saw the beam everytime until below 150 feet it was hit or miss. Scatter and off axis detection was about 76 percent however, do not expect to catch much of it or any at all if you are too close to your "rabbit". Stay a bit back. Im not disputing Veil Guy's test's because they were quite informative and quite accurate, im jus sayin that different results are produced for every test given the mounting position.

I Believe with mulitple cars around higher is better. Lower the rd all the rd can see is a wall of metal infront of it. Remember the officer hand is gonna wobble. Allot of times he wobbles upward towards the driver. I have gotten hits straight through other peoples windshields. Plus if their is a big fat suv in front of you their is no chance of picking up scatter down low. I respect the veil guy but cobra having the same laser detection as whistler. Now thats
b u l l. I know from enough road testing that cobra is not even in the same ballpark as whistler when it comes to detection. When people do laser testing it needs to be real world shooting somebody off the side of the road in a controlled enviroment is not real world it looks it but its not. Somebody needs to sit off the side of the freeway and point a laser gun at traffic and have THE CAR come up in traffic and have the guy point the laser at another car and see if it picks up scatter direct hits etc. This simulates real traffic conditions and testing should be subjective determine why it didnt pick it up. Then write up in what traffic condition did it not pick up laser. Not how many feet till it went beep. How many feet till it beep dosent mean anything because you could be at that feet in the real world and it not even go off. Then your S O L right. The rd need to be tested in real traffic conditions. Veils real world driving test was probably the best example of what I'm talking about. This kind of testing would be well worthwhile and hilarious because you could laser cop cars going by and see the looks on their faces when they get lasered..

The pro 58 can be had for 90 bucks. the rx55 from bel for about 160.00 if you look around. And looking at the 05 test results, I am wondering why I didnt shell out the extra 60 bucks for the bel. Looks like it has a KA band 400 foot advantange vs. the pro58.. Can anyone tell me otherwise?
