That should awnser your question somewhat.

    2 Things to note:

    1) With Ka the LEO's may be using instant-on, so essentially you may get no warning at all.

    2) The Ka frequencies are much harder to detect then lets say X or K band, so a shorter range is common within the Ka-band especially compared to X&K band(s).

Ka is very short detection range compared to the miles long detection of K and X band. On a flat deserted streight road the 985 can stretch its legs and give you between 2-3 miles range. However that is in perfect conditions. Real world range with the 985, you should get 1 mile range. Please note that this is when there is a direct threat to you from the officer. If an officer is on the other side of a divided road, shooting in another direction or being blocked by traffic all of which is not a real threat to you, then join the club, your in the same boat as the rest of us 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, 3/4 mile range. Generaly speaking if you get 1 mile range in real world traffic conditions you will have pleanty of time to slow. 2 miles is fantastic, but realisticly anything more than that and you could start to dismiss a "blip" as a false.

If you already have it mounted high then your good to go. If you seem to be disapointed with the range, then it is because of certain factors, obviously the detector can not see around corners, or the officer blocked by traffic as said above, etc. Or perhaps your detector is suffering from problems. You can buy and try another primum detector if it does not substantially improve in your opinion then you know that the 985 is not at fault and you can choose to return the RD, no money loss. Then you knowfor sure your moneys better spent on a jammer.

well the detector has been great for me. i was thinking that since i had this detector for like 3 years now i was planning to upgrade to a rx65. the detector seems to be working fine. i just been debating weather its giving me enough warning time. i live in nj and its very commom to come accross ka band. i been targeted with laser and was fined for speeding. So now im in the position on getting more protection so as of right now i veil my hd, Ls, painted flat black vw emblem, and have my 985 mounted under my rearview. i have noticed that i been getting longer range in detection but i haven't gotten enough warning on ka which is my concern. laser is getting more popular in nj but ka seems to be used more often in area's where i drive in. So im confused do i upgrade to a rx65? get a blinder m20 and match it with my 985? what should i do? thanks agian for your feedback in advance..

Well when you say not enough time to slow, do you mean the officer is directly targeting you/your traffic... or is the officer just passing i nthe opposite direction not realy targeting you. My area is heavey with Ka, and at times I only get a few seconds warning but that is when the officer is not directly targeting me, is blocked by traffic or what ever. But the time that I do roll up on a real speed trap, I have consistantly recieved 1 mile detection range, and that is in a urban area with traffic. On an open stretch of highway I have gotten over 1+ miles of range, 1 mile is pleanty of time to slow.

A far as laser, you need to review and understand GOL results www.guysoflidar.com and understand that although a jammer is the best investment, it is not full proof either.

Rmember this is a cat and mouse game, ultimately a smart officer can get anyone with any countermeasure, in that regard the best countermeasure is your brains... out smart the officer.

i have a question i noticed that there was a leo parked in his favorite donut ship and left his x band radar on. when i was driving i detected it from at least a mile + then i went searching for him and of coarse he was in the donut shop. when i puled in i was getting #3 on my 985 when i was about80ft away. also on ka band i sat next to a leo and asked her if her radar was on and she said no while im detecting it and i was getting a 6 on my 985. i fing it weird is my detector giving up on me or am i not going something right? put it saved me 100000+ times and dont want ot see it go and if it is time to upgrade im going to stick with bel because i've always been loyal to them..

Unless you are in the driver seat of the police crusier, you do not know what is on or off, or laying on the floor etc. Asking a cop does not nessesarily mean that they are going to be honest with you, or perhaps she was tell you the truth but there was another source somewhere else? Sometimes I can be next to a LEO and it will be half stregth, next time another leo and it will be full stregth, defferent radar guns, even the same can have different power levels, note that this is NOT user adjustable, they just come from the factory set that way.

Only you know if your detector is performing differently from before, and if it is looseing sensitivity you can always try a 30 day money back guarrantee and get the V1 or whatever you like and see if it performes any better as far as sensitivity and alert range.

well the leo that i picked up using ka at the local donut shop was not pointed towards the highway. when i pulled up to her i told her what gun she was using. she told me that it was a stalker. then i asked her if it was on and she said that it wasn't and then i was okim picking it up. After she questioned me why i was asking and told her that i am a radar fanatic she laughed. then i asked her if she will allow me to have to test runs which she was happy enough to do it i did picked it up about 3/4 to 1/2 mile away as i came over the hill. but before the test runs i was not getting full strenghth. x band is great for me i get over 2 mile detection. i think i might need better testing

just a quick note i found a speed check runnign k (those used saying your speed is **) and when i was coming down the hill the street went around a curb and detected k band .3 miles and my detector showed 6 then at .4 miles it went 9. so close to a half mile detection. is this good numbers ?

9 means that i am clocked and its picking up my speed right? cause i figures 9 means u are at the source

Well the level does not nessecarily mean that they can or can not clock you. Just think of line of sight, all they have to do is be able to see you and you cooked. Obviously they should only target you when they can CLEARLY identify your make of car. But they do not have to.

We do not know exactly how bad the curve was and the surroundings, each case can vary.

I would not say that particular performance was great, but as long as you can judge for yourself that you have sufficent time to slow is good enough. Typically I would say that anything from .5 mile to 1.0 mile is good detection for around a curve.

Note that these are not easy answers because there are so many variable. You trying to get an absolute answer, the only way you can get that is a trest like GOL. If you want to edge out better performance get a Bel 995 ($225), or bite the bullet and go after Escort or V1, try and see if it makes a big difference, I asume it will make at least a little difference (detection range). Remember you normally have 30 days to try and see if it will make you sleep easy at night.
