    Default RX65 affected by heat?

Just bought an RX65. Worked great on the way up to Minnesota. On the way home it started saying "SelfCal" then the scan mode I was in would blink. It did this on serveral different occasions. Then one time after doing that it said "service required." I turned it off and on again and it went through the same process ending with "service required." I then unplugged it and put it on the floor of the car because I was mad that it broke. Later I plugged it back in and it worked fine the rest of the way home. I talked to the guy I bought it from and he said that heat can cause that to happen sometimes. Is this true? Should I be concerned about this or just wait to see if it happens again? I only plan on using the RD on trips and not in the city so I haven't used it since. Thanks for any info!

it's common...mine did the exact same thing about a week and a half of owning it...and it was not hot....sent it back today for a new one..but to be honest i'm scared the new one will do the same

oh and it kept doing it even after being unplugged and resetting it several times...it just takes longer to flash after unplugging

do you let the ignition turn it on? i have read that voltage surge can cause it..posted by radarroy on another thread

Yes I have let the ignition turn it on.

P.S. Nice car. Would have one too if I weren't married. Settled for a 2.5xt Outback. Still gets up and goes for a wagon though!

ive read on another site that if the temp gets over 140 f it messes up the self calibration on the detector and it cant calibrate itself i think they said that its only the new one that it happens to with the m4 antenna

well that seems to ba a common problem. My Rx-65 overheated to and i had to send it in. I make sure i take my escort down off the windshield everytime when i leave my car. The V1 on the other hand is AMAZING, you can leave this thing up on the windhiels in temps up to 158*. No problem even in Texas. I put a oven thermommeter in my car when the outside temp was 101* outside. My car was 120*. Thats freaking hot. I even put the thrmometer in the glove box and it was only 103*.<-big difference.

that sucks. does the X50 do it too? OT: My uncle & aunt were just over, 2 weeks they told me about it after seeing my V1 on the table but couldn't remember the name, he had it with him tonight, kept it in the case in the trunk of their malibu.

The question to me is - how can you tell if the V1 has been harmed by the heat? It has no built in self test. It could be a fair amount out of tune and still pick up most radars.

What I want to know is just how far out of tune does an RX65 need to be before it says "service required".
