Default Using a Visor Organizer with STi Driver

Hi all, does anyone know if using an sti driver in a visor holder/organizer affects range and or detection? I ask only because I got my sti last week, been using it mostly on the highway. I have noticed that where I have it placed in my visor holder is about 6-7" back from the top of the windshield. I have it behind a tint shade; non-metallic, 23% on the tint. I have noticed that in town, I usually visually spot the LEO before he tags me with instant-on. I get the alert from the sti usually after I see him/her. I have to use the visor organizer, due to legalities where I'm located. I purchased the visor organizer from a different site. I've had Police cars beside and behind me for up to 4 mins, and not even got a second look. I sat beside an OPP vehicle on the Hwy today on my way home, not 5 feet away. He had the Spectre unit visible in his cruiser. I could only make out a green light (power), no alerts! That's the main reason I chose the sti. I'm just not sure if by where I have it placed, it's affecting its detection abilities and or range. Any advice would be appreciated!

The visor organizer which you likely are using will not affect range. The problem simply is that cops are very selective these days about how often they use I/O while monitoring traffic. They seemed to have learned to use fairly long intervals in between individual I/O bursts. In the end, just remember that its all about revenue rather than highway safety. If cops and politicians were truly concerned about highway safety, then they would order that cops leave their radar guns on all the time since then everyone with a radar detector would slow down. This then would cause other drivers to slow down too.

Funny, not one hour after writing this post; I was headed off to the bank. I pulled on to one a road in town, and instantly got a "ka band" alert. The STi picked off the LEO almost half a mile away, coming from the opposite direction; bouncing up and down hills coming toward me. Made me feel good!

Considering where you live, do not post pictures of your STi installation or anything about your car.

Man, your area must be tough!

We have seen some pictures on here showing TX DPS units with Spectre. Do you or anyone else on here have pictures of VA LEO vehicles with Spectre?

I live in the most anal, socialist Province in the country. RD's have been illegal here since 1975. I saw an unmarked LEO today on the highway that had a Spectre with the nice shiny silver horn on the end; probably a Spectre IV He didn't look twice at me. The STi is definitely electronically "invisible" I think as long as I don't draw attention my driving, like slam on the brakes at night from an I/O hit, I should be able to keep my RD and stay out of trouble (knock on wood) I'll google and see if I can find any photos of the VA LEO's with their Spectre's. I guess VA is almost as bad as Ontario. Does anyone know the fine or penalty for using a RD in VA? We're travelling through there later this year.

You make a good point about not drawing attention. That is something that many drivers do not understand. Draw attention and you likely will! I think the three things that drivers need to keep in mind are:
    Where you drive
    What you drive
    How you drive

If you know those three things and all the factors included in each, you will be well informed and be able to make prudent decisions. Actions are another matter.

Seems to me that you think out the situation and drive accordingly which is a good thing.

I am curious about the use of visor organizers for RD use. Some RD generate a lot of heat and I am wondering if using a RD in a visor holder would cause probblems because of the heat generated? Anyone know?

I'd also like to know the penalties fro RD use in VA and DC? Anyone know?

    Thanks.

A lot of the visor organizers have an open slot at one end; primarily so the lens of the RD can see the road. Also, heat build up may play a part in that too. I've checked on the RD while in the visor (with no one around) and yes it does get warm. Compare that to leaving it in the middle of the windshield, unprotected and exposed and I think the heat build up inside the visor organizer, is still less. Just my .02

That is how I run my STI. I have it between the visor and an organizer. It has worked well for me.
