    Default Speaker repair

Is it possible to self-repair the dead speaker in my V995? A quick search on the net show this to be an all-to-common problem for Bel owners.

Also, has anyone been able to get 5 years out of a radar detector? My V995 lasted only three, my Valentine 1 only a little over two, and an old high-end Cobra lasted only two months past the one-year warranty. I find this odd. I have several 8-10 year old servers still happily in service; my 8 year old Garmin VGPS sits outdoors everyday on the dash of an open top jeep and it still runs great. My Garmin iQue GPS Palm Pilot also sits on the same dash -- it is four years old and still works fine.

$400 for a one-trick-pony device is pretty pricey in today's world of electronics.

Just wondering why my radar detectors don't last as long as my other gadgets?

Does the 995 have a 3.5mm speaker/headphone jack? If so, an external amplified speaker may be the way to go if you're only using it in one vehicle. On the other hand, a 5 year old 995 is probably in need of a tune up so sending it in to get the speaker fixed too wouldn't be a bad idea. If you still have the V1, see what it costs for an upgrade or tune up. I can't speak for the Garmin, but radar detectors don't handle extreme temps well if you are always leaving it on your windshield.

I was searching for an answer to same problem with my 6 year old 985.

I was able to order the speaker from Bel for $7 [$2.50 for the speaker + shipping]

display and detection work great, just no sound when I want it

Repair looks easy, 2 screws out and solder new speaker on
