    Default Just bought RX65 disappointed!

This is my first frequency radar/laser detector.

Plugged it in the other day, been using it since approximately covering 200 miles, these are the results:

Picking up LOTS of K band, most of it being from sensors upon the top traffic lights (both temporary and fixed) and other senors in urban areas.

Does pick up on Gatso camera's but finding due to the other false alerts it's hard to determine what IS a threat and what's not.

Haven't encountered a speed trap with Police using radar guns yet, but again it's gonna be hard to determine whether it's a threat until I'm more or less on top of em'!

Picking up a few Laser alerts also, these being false. sometimes while in traffic driving, others while manouvering in urban areas. None where the Police have set up traps!

Lastly and this is the MOST disappointing occurence yet. The Police had set up a mobile Gatso, clocking driver's speeds from a van with the unit placed in the rear of the van with a cutaway in the rear doors. The unit being in line with oncoming traffic. I believe this unit use obtains driver's speeds by using a Laser device connected to a camera. I drove past it over ten times, only once did the RX65 give me a laser alert!!!

I'm REALLY disappointed, I thought this was one of the best detectors available!! Doesn't seem to be performing like one!

Is this simply what to expect from it? Could it be malfunctioning or possibly the item I have isn't a European version?

    Please help!

The RX-65 is a good radar detector, but not the best performance wise.

    1. Radar/Laser detectors provide no protection against later, if it beeps for laser, they have your speed. If you want protection from laser, you need a laser jammer.

    2. Cops use instant on at times. They leave the gun off so your detector doesn't alert unless they shoot it. Have someone in front of you so that he gets the other guys speed while your detector beeps and slows down.

I am not sure of whether or not the cameras use laser. Someone that has them in their area may have to chime in on this one. Best of luck to you.

Give it time, the RX65 is a pretty good performer. I do advise returning it for an RX65e though, it does better against the European speed cameras.

Laser alerts are pretty much useless unless you can get a jammer.

Use a GPS navigation for fixed cameras. In Romania there is a site where you can download a POI file with the fixed radars and cameras. Just upload that file to your navigation software, enable alerting and you are alerted when approaching a camera or radar. There must be something like that in UK.
For mobile radar the detector is the only defense. In time you will notice that door sensors have weak signals, 1-2 bars, and radar has full alert when you are in his range.

RX65 is a decent unit. I have had a ton of saves with that unit. It's usually chatty..

Cops these days have the advantage, with laser and I/O you can not react fast enough with only a detector.

I live in Denmark (Scandinavia). I own the Bel Vector 995 and I have found it to be almost worthless against photo radar vans operating in the K-band. Usually the warning range is only 10-30 meters So no, I don´t think your unit is defective. It is just not good enough.

I also own the Valentine1 and that thing can sniff out the radar vans with no problem. The shortest warning range I have encountered was 300 meters. The longest was more than 1000 meters! Typically the warning range is between 400-500 meters.

The odd thing is that the old Bel detectors are better at detecting k-band photo radar vans but still not as good as the V1. I know it sounds crazy that the old Bel detectors are better than the new ones but that is what I have observed. So my advice: Get the V1! I bought mine 2 years ago and I can highly recommend it.

I wish I had bought the V1 from the start. Instead I bought a Cobra and after that a Bel Vector. Both these units has been a waste of money since they are worthless against radar used by the Danish police.

his rx65 is extremely chatty because of actual sources - albeit falses - and you think the V1 is gonna help. he'll need prozac after 2 days with the V1. sure hope he knows how to program it. 9500 might be a better option.

Photo radar is a low power radar. The beam is not pointed towards you, it measures your speed after you pass by the radar, from behind.
That's why most detectors will alert very close to the radar.
In Romania there are some traffipax speedophot working like this, but bels cand detect them in time.

Maybe your windshield is the problem. If not, you may want to upgrade to a V1, Redline or STI or a european RX65 or X50. The european versions are better against some radars.
