    Default AURA database?

Has or does anybody use the AURA database for the GPS enabled Cobra's by chance? If so, what do you think about it? Does there seem to be enough people that use it to make the program useful? I'm hoping running the AURA program along with Trapster will hopefully be a nice little "heads up" on a few unfamiliar areas which I will be traveling this Spring and Summer.

The Aura database is accurate from what I have seen. My 9960G hasn't missed a speed camera. If you are looking for a budget radar detector in a red light camera infested area the 9960G is a good choice if you get it for $200 or less. If you want a more sensitive dash mount detector and don't mind spending the money the 9500ix isn't a bad choice either.

I ran it with a Cobra 9550G. But I also ran Trapster and Phantom Alert on a TomTom GPS. That way I had it all covered.

Yes, the 9960g is what I'm actually looking into. A local store retails them at 189 bucks along with a nice return policy so that shouldn't be a problem. I've came across several reviews on them and everybody seems to be pretty happy with them, unlike many other Cobra models.

They use the same platform as the XRS 9745. The XRS 9745 did well in the GOL test imo. However, the street price didn't justify the performance. The 9960G having free updates to the Aura database makes the detector a good value for a GPS enabled detector. In my findings though, the Cobra shares the weakness of Escort to where it struggles in detecting quick bursts of instant on. Be mindful of that if you choose this detector.

Thanks Jason, I'm running the 9745 currently, which for where I live it does just fine for me. The cops around me aren't tricky in anyway, shape, or form. No instant on, laser, etc. A new job of mine will involve a lot of driving in unknown areas so I'm very interested in the GPS enabled detectors for the future. I understand the Cobras aren't anywhere near the best detector out there but for my situation and budget they are what I have always used and I have noticed them to get consistently better through the years for the most part.

So, you think the over-all performance of the 9745 and the 9960G are about the same sensitivity wise on the K and Ka bands?

Performance will be exactly the same.(Unless your unit has been baking in the sun and performance suffered as a result.) You will just get more features, including a compass, a battery voltage meter, and of course, the gps feature. The display looks awesome imo. Just beware, ramp up is very bad on this model, I don't know how it is on the XRS 9745, but it will drop the signal and come back, even with C/O.

I would trust the 9960G in my area even though instant on is used, it will pick up instant on, you just have to be within about a mile or so and the trigger pulls have to be long enough. It's hard for a detector with ramp up this bad to pick up instant on when it can barely hold a signal against constant on.

Yeah, the display does seem to look pretty good. I've seen a few videos on Youtube with it. The 9745 ramp up isn't terrible but it isn't anywhere near good either. It works decently when it wants to. But thanks for all of the information, you taught me a lot about this RD. One more question for you: Are there any differences between the 9960 and 9970 besides the touch screen stuff?

No difference at all, the 9970G is a sham in my opinion anyways. A 1.5" touch screen sounds like a pain in the rear to me. It uses the same detection platform as the 9960G and the XRS 9745 as well as the XRS 9955 which is basically the 9960G without the gps module.
