well doing a little search I found out my answer which was disappointing to say the least about S/Z.
I have followed these guys since they started and only have kind words for their group.

After about 4 months in the Houston area, I have been very happy/satisfied with my "Crapbra" 9970G.
The 9970g is still a very good detector IMO.
My cobra built on the same platform has very good off axis pick up of radar signals better then my newer cobra in fact !
It blows away my newer designed stinker Whistler 78 se in this regard and is much more reliable in picking up radar.
The 78 SE is a VERY hit and miss detector
People love whistlers but the ones I have have been below par detectors
since the newer ones are still designed around the older platforms I see no reason to believe they are any better then these were.
