    Post Dumb Question--Rain and Radar/Laser

OK, it's probably a stupid question. But, other than the fact that most leo's don't like the rain (or is that they melt in the rain--lol, just kidding), how effective are radar and laser guns in the rain? Also, how effective are the detectors and counter-measures?

Obviously, there will be drastic differences between a torrential downpour (no one should be out on the road) versus a dreary, misty day (more likely to have everyone out).

Just trying to get a grasp of this stuff...

High humidity and rain usually decrease the range of radar units. Rain also scatters laser, so you'll seldom see any LIDAR enforcement in the rain. However, I think the ProLaser III has an all-weather mode that still makes it effective in the rain.

Default Re: Effectiveness of Lidar Jammers against "Weather" Mode Laser?

Thanks. I thought it worked that way, but the concern is how effective the jammers would be against "weather" mode equipped units? I checked the LTI site and the 20/20 TruSpeed also has a "weather" mode.

Back in the 80's I got nailed with instant on x-band in a torrential downpour. I was a teen and thought (no cops will be using radar in this down pour). I guess if the ticket is fat enough they will stand in a down pour to issue it.

The only thing "weather" mode does on guns is cause the gun to ignore readings below a certain distance (200 feet or so). Thus, beam scatter off of rain drops becomes irrelevant.

Due to the scatter by rain, it will take a bit longer to lock in a speed in the rain, and jammer performance may be similarly reduced, but in the end both will cancel out so if your jammer works well in good weather it should work well enough in the bad weather (not that people actually speed in bad weather, right? )

Jammer will still have the upper hand due to one way
propagation advantage ...same for radar , your rd
will pickup before the police radar have a reading .

I was reading how LIDAR can be used in rain, and that scares me.

i would have fumbled for my license and dropped my registration on the floor while he stood out in that rain! LOL...then when giving it to him, right before he took my license, etc, I would have said oops! and intentionally dropped it on the floor.. all that time, watching him get soaked! hahahaha

Back in the 80s, the leo probably would have accidentally broken your taillight and added it to the ticket for continuously dropping your license and registration. And/or asked you to step out into the rain with him. Not likely you'd win that won. not-lol
