    Default Vertical Mounting Bracket

    Hi all,

I have the Passport 8500 X50 and have had it for about a month now. I have had 2 saves so far and it does work well, just that its multanova performance varies! I know this is due to it being a Wideband Ka detector etc...

For example, about 2 weeks ago I was driving in the country and got 500 - 600m on a multanova 6F. That was incredible range, however, it has also been known to give as little as 3-4 seconds on some multanovas as well. Earlier today I went past a multanova and only got about 4 seconds so I went back past it holding the detector vertical and I got literally 3-4 seconds more.

So I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a vertical mount from, or don't they sell such an item? Has anyone else witnessed the better performance from mounting the detector vertically?

    Thanks.

Thats interesting... maybe Jim can answer... does Radar have directionality to the wave? Light of course does because you can wear polarized lenses and filter out light with certain orientations. Two polarized glasses at 90 degrees to each other block light 100%

Does radar work the same way? Is there a standard orientation used by manufacturers?

I had read about a team in Europe somewhere that did testing with several of the major detectors, and I got the link from a radar detector forum. The link was in some other language and I couldn't translate it, however, from the general gist of it, I do think mounting the detector vertically does work.

If there are no brackets that are available to Australia, I might have to make custom mounts, but that might be difficult. Anyway, in the mean time, I will keep testing the difference between normal horizontal mounting as well as vertical mounting.

It has to do with the polarization of the radar signal. If you don't match the polarization, it can reduce range significantly. For most police radar it doesn't matter: most police radar antennas have "circular polarization" so you'll get the same range whether the detector is mounted vertically or horizontally. But the multanova is different: it is horizontally polarized, while the radar detectors are normally vertically polarized, hence you'll get the most range by turning the detector on it's side to match the multanova's polarization.

So if for police radar polarization does not matter due to circular polarization and for fixed cams the standard is vertical... then why don't manufacturers use the vertical polarization? would that mean having to set up the horn vertically?

OK, thanks for the description Jimbonzzz!

I am into the Physics and Engineering side of things and that definitely makes sense. I think that all Escort 8500 users who deal with multanovas regularly should definitely try it positioning it vertically (if they haven't done so already) as it makes a remarkable improvement!

Would turning 90 degrees to left be better than turning 90 degrees to the right and vice versa.
ie. which side should be up?

Either side would be equal in performance.
