Having used my new 9500i for about two weeks, I can say that it is an excellent radar detector. I had to replace my 8500 X50, because it is totally inexcusable for that unit to totally miss some of the radar that LEOs shoot at you.
When the 8500 X50 picked up a signal though, the ramp up was perfect. My 9500i did scare the snot out of me the second day I owned it by being totally dead silent and then screaming at me out of the blue when I don't even believe the signal was that strong, based on the location I was in and based on my prior use in the same area for three years with the 8500 X50.
In other instances, I have seen my 9500i ramp up exactly the way the old 8500 X50 does. But after reading the users manual again as a refresher, couldn't it also be possible that the 9500i screaming at us may be an improvement over a lazy 8500? Maybe the 8500 should have screamed at us more often, based on certain signals, and the 9500i was an improvement?

About a month ago I watched a LEO straight up tagging me with his radar or laser gun about 15 feet away from me and my 8500 X50 didn't pick up the signal. It happened again two weeks later so I plunked down the cash for the 9500i.
Any detector that isn't the best is a waste of money. The 8500 X50 is obsolete now.
The GPS features are not overrated. It's excellent and intelligence at its finest. The best thing is storing speedtraps. Now when you let a friend borrow your car, you leave the detector in there to scare them out of speeding. Or you can delete those useless X band signals at the Walmart that you passed on the highway. Silence is golden.

It sounds to me that your X50 was defective, I don't agree at all that they are obsolete. My son has an X50 & it works WAY better than the 9500i that we returned for a refund.

I personally don’t mind the ramp up, I like the quiet and it works well with Auto mute. You may have one that’s ok?
The problem for most users is there isn’t any in-between alert it goes from a 1 or 2 striate to an 8 or 9.
My 8500 was 1-1-2-2-3-3-4-4-5-5-6-6-7-7-
My 9500I is 1-1-2-2-7-9-9-10
It is an improvement if you like it scaring your pants off when it gets a real alert. :wink:
The 8500 would only become obsolete if the 9500! was the same price.
It's not defective. Some LEO's have a new radar gun that embarrasses the 8500 X50. Somebody here I believe posted a video on YouTube with the STi alerting and the V1 alerting, but the 8500 X50 doesn't alert. The 8500 X50 is now too old. It's time for either a new detector (i.e., the 9500i) or at the very least the latest update from Escort (if the new update even works for that particular radar gun).Originally Posted by jmorton10

*Can't really go wrong with any of the top 3. Driving habits/surroundings/LEO's will vary results.
If / When the ramp up is updated I'm going to consider getting another one. I've got this tick in the back of my mind that loves this freakin detector.

I am still waiting for Escort to send it back. For future reference to others, if you send anything to them, be prepared to be without it for a month.
They are not like V1, you wont have it back in 3-4 days.

The filtering on the 9500I is really amazing.
City is way quiet.
Auto is really cool how it makes the 9500I quiet automaticley.
Highway has full sensitivity but is still quiet because of the below.
1/2 the reason it falsies less is because the off axis passed 40 degrees is decreased (compared to a V1 & old 8500). Radar over 40 degrees (because of the cosign effect) is pretty useless for LEO's anyway.
its pritty smart because how many roads have a 90 degree turn with no reflection that you will be speeding into. Even 1/2 way through the turn you will receave his radar befor he will even see you.
I got my 8500 back in a week, that’s why I think they are holding yours for the update.brian1972ct
