Default My great radar runaround(with a happy ending)...

I have had the worst runaround with radar detectors as of late. I first started off with a Beltronics Express 925 for a couple of months, then I decided to upgrade to a Whistler 1743. For my birthday my uncle got me a $200 gift certificate for Flying J(intended for gas). I looked at the radar section, and instead of gas decided on a Beltronics Vector 955 for $280. After about two weeks, I was at our Flying J again and saw a new model, the Escort 8500 X50 for $299, so I immediattly returned the 955 and paid 20 bucks more for an 8500. It isnt too bad, in the end I paid 100 dollars for one of the top tier radar detectors.

Once I mounted the detector for the maiden ride, I switched it to Expertmode, I'm lucky I did because right by a construction update sign(A "K" false alert), I got a readout for two "Ka" sources and the "K". There were two Ohio Troopers running a construction speed trap. After about five minutes I knew I made the right choice in the 8500.

Do they still run X band in Ohio? I get conflicting reports on this. X band is still used in Indiana, but the use of it seems to be declining.

According to Roy, the Ohio State Police recently purchased some light-bar mounted x-band radar units...

That's interesting! I would like to see a picture of those sometimes. I wonder if they set them up for moving radar or stationary. OSP likes to run stationary radar from the median so the antenna would almost have to face sideways. Of course they could reposition the patrol car too. Maybe the antenna has a rotator LOL! It would be the most sophisticated K-55 around.

This brings up another question. How many radar mfrs. still make X band radar? I don't mean to go to far off topic though.

Suffice it to say I would not turn off my X band.
