Default Q's about GOL 8/08 Radar Detector tests

I am trying to understand exactly how the radar detectors were tested at GOL August 2008.

The GOL website says, "we set up the radar guns in a forward-facing configuration, aiming them away from the direction of travel, and also pointed them up to reduce the signal strength."

I don't understand the "forward facing" part compared to the "away from the direction of travel" part.

I got the "pointed them up part." Although I would like to know how far (how many degrees) they were pointed up.

Was this a test to see how far detectors detected a LEO shooting people going in the opposite direction? In other words to see how well the detectors detected leakage from the rear of a gun in a valley (or at the foot of a hill) pointed up a hill targeting cars coming down the hill that you would soon climb after passing the LEO?

I am less concerned about LEO's targeting cars going in the opposite direction than I am. I am most concerned when the gun is aimed head on toward the direction of travel, not away from it.

They were defining what 'forward-facing' radar is. The reason they test it that it is difficult to detect.

We had to use forward facing radar because we did not have any foam. If we did not do forward facing then our course could not have held the detectors.

I would say they were about 40 degrees up, with nothing in front of the radar gun to reflect the radar signal. The test course was maybe 3000 ft max. That 9500ci still almost detected the Stalker ATR Ka band signal the whole way.

I like the test as it represents a very big threat we face in NY. Troopers have Stalker (Duals at least). They have front and rear antennas. You will see them in the medium shooting away from you but they have the ability to engage their rear antenna with a push of the remote and get you as you approach them from the rear. Very common tactic here along with moving i/o, which is also deadly.

My STI will not alert from the antenna facing the opposite direction until it may be too late, but the STI-R gets the front antenna I/O a long ways before you are in the strike zone for the rear antenna.

Bottom Line is I want to know about all radar in my area as it could move to my direction next. STI-R has saved me a few times from this scenario, which apparently is dificult to detect based on the tests.

I remember in one of last years tests where Michael B commented that none of the top tier detectors would alert to the off axis targeting of a rabbit when they were i/o about 1,000 ft ahead. Lets see that test again with the STI-R or 9500CI. I think the results may be a bit different.

Thanks to Bel/Escort for a product that adequately covers this type of threat.

Thanks to GOL for performing this test as I firmly belive this is a "real world" problem that has a solution.

On the third pass and maybe even the first pass of the first video of the thread below, I detected the Stalker sign(red) that was well over 1000 ft down the side road, while the intersection was well over 1000ft ahead of my car(green). I'd venture to say the STi-R and the 9500ci would pass Michael B's test.

Delaware & Virginia state troopers also use forward facing and it's deadly when they set on the side of an exit ramp. It's like being hit with laser from behind, you don't see them until it's to late.

CHP sits on freeway onramps running forward facing Stalker. They've even shown them using this tactic a couple of times on "Speeders".
