Default Worn LI Wire Causing Connection Errors

I did a quick search and could not find anything.

When I installed my LI last summer I made the mistake of routed the wire through the hole where the hood latches to the car. Due to the trouble I had getting through the firewall in the first place (including partially unseating the rubber grommet) I decided to just leave it alone.

Over time the friction from the latch has partially worn through the cord. I put some electrical tape around it to slow the wear, but it is to the point where you can see the individual colored wires inside.

Just recently I started getting an error message saying that the connection was poor or bad to one of the heads (confirmed that it is the head by switching the connection to the main unit). I am assuming this is due to a deteriorated wire. Flipping it off then back on usually is enough to get it working again.

    So now for my question:

    A) Is there a way to replace the worn cable/wire without removing the head and re-routing through the firewall? Can the bad section be spliced out and routed through a different area away from the latch?

    B) If not, is there a way to fix this without buying a new head?

    C) If neither of the above, what material could I use to protect the wire from further wear? Electrical tape is not cutting it.

    Thanks in advance.

I don't believe there is a way to separate the wire from the head, unless LI has a new gig about it.

What I found useful is to wrap the wires with black plastic shielding available in any auto parts store.

Please contact LI on the forum here, Cliff will help you out.

    Matt,

Email me directly and I will be more than happy to Warranty it for you.

A piece of rubber hose placed around the sensor cable will prevent this issue from occurring again!

    Thanks for the quick response.

Cliff, just sent and email (hopefully it is the same address as last summer).

DGD, if you need help finding proper wire routing for or help installing the new heads, let me know. I also wouldn't mind helping out others in MA if you wanna set something up. I would also check with fleabay or Best Buy for 1/4 wire loom. It does wonders for protecting wiring through the engine bay from heat and sharp edges. Only about $4 for 30 ft.

Thanks PMoth. I am checking with Cliff to see if it's OK to just cut the head off. If so, the install should be much easier the 2nd time around with the original wire already threaded through the firewall.

I will just tape the new wire to the old, and pull it through.
