Default Your expertise What jammer & Mounting Location...

Alright guys I am either going to get the ZR3 or the Blinder M-20 (price is an issue), I was wondering what jammer, in what location would be the best IYO...

It seems as if the Blinder is a bit more consistant as far as PT distance from videos and such, but The ZR3 seems to have the placement advantage on my car... 1 head for the LP and one for each faux-headlight, I will put all 3 up-front. (Note there is no reflective 'lense' behind those plastic pieces, as I obviously have pop-up headlights).

Also honestly: I dont need amazing JTG or PT numbers down to 75feet, I just want something that on the NYS thruway will give me time enough to slow down.

    Here are the potential set-ups.

I would really prefer the M-20 (for price reasons).

Possible mounting locations: (Blinder Blue, ZR3 Green)

    Comments? Ideas...

    Nice! A 1Ga Talon! Turbo?

When I had my old 1Gb Eclipse (silver metallic  , plus the exposed headlights [and yes, by the time I got the ZR3, I'd already switched-out my "b" generation's exposed headlamps for aftermarket ones with clear lenses, as my old OEM lenses were so aged that my restoration attempt, which was actually the second one, as I did the first restoration 4 years previous, failed]- talk about bad for LIDAR!), I had a ZR3 setup - I actually only used the two front heads up-front, and they gave me excellent protection (JTG? dunno, and honestly, I highly doubt it ops: ) here in Ohio and metro-Cleveland. I never received a ticket, and definitely, in two separate incidences, I should have.

A front plate is mandatory here in Ohio, and I've always kept mine on due to the type of cars I drive - which are usually enforcement targets - as well as the fact that this law is heavily enforced in my area.

Trace the "blue" lines of your anticipated Blinder placement to the lower front radiator intake area, under the bumper and to either side of the front plate, and you'll have exactly where I placed my ZR3 heads.

I think that although jamming might be better where you've got your units "placed" in the picture, it's going to be very hard to keep them from prying eyes/hands in such an obvious location.

Have you entertained the possibility of cutting into your bumper skin? The problem with such a "flush mount," of course, is that it negatively impacts jammer performance....

What about the distance between, say, where I had my ZR3 heads placed (you'd substitute in Blinders) - and to where your exposed faux-headlight housing would be?

I agree with the crazyVolvo guy Maybe even squeeze the heads a little closer to the plate seeing as you have pop up headlights. Give them a single nice target and defend it 8)

That's why we're saying to go with an "under the bumper" mounting solution instead.

Unless he wants to cut the bumper skin and go for a recessed mount (which would pose some degradation of jamming performance, to my understanding), it would otherwise leave a "surface mounted" jammer head way, way too out in the open....

    TSi+WRX:

Its just a first Gen 2.0 FWD [1990]... no turbo or anything special (Only 90,000 miles though). (I have a Kawasaki Superbike if I feel the need for speed.) 8)

I hear you about the front plate requirement: Same in NY, and they do really like to harass the 'sporty cars' here as well.

As for the location... I would only leave them on the bumper (wide out in the open) for thruway trips where Lidar is used extensively, other then that I would take them off... since my city doesn't use Lidar at all, so they wouldnt be on very often.

I dont really wanna cut into the car to much... for the 'flush mount' look, I am looking at a new car next spring/summer.

I may just go with your idea (and CVR's) of mounting them 'below the bumper' for a more 'perminant' install, so it keeps them out of site, and out of mind... and that way I can just leave them on (the car) 24/7.

And its good to hear that either he ZR3 or the Blinder should be effective for this set-up, I really plan on going with the Blinder... mainly because $$.

Hey, nothing wrong with the 2.0L FWD. Great at getting around with good mileage, and if you manage the gears right, it's actually got decent pickup for something that small and naturally-aspirated.

Wow, a 1Ga with only 90K miles? Nice find!

I agree with crazyVOLVOrob, mounting and re-mounting the jammer heads is a pain in the behind.

I suppose you could rig-up a quick-release device for the actual bumper mount or even use 3M Automotive Trim/Mo(u)lding tape as a temporary mounting solution, but where are you going to "store" the heads?

Granted, there's PLENTY of space in the 2.0L NA engine-compartment where you could pack away even the largest of the jammer heads - even two or three units, but I'd be worried about heat and/or engine-bay solvent (including everything from brake fluid to coolant to engine-oil) damage.....

I know that on the DSMs, their body-panels offer wide enough gaps that you can trail the wire (even the really thick ones that come with the ZR3) through the gap between the front fender and the A-pillar. But having to repeat the process over and over wouldn't be something that I'd necessarily look forward to, if you get my meaning.

Still, if you only used it, say, once a month, and don't mind the 15 or so minutes that it may take to "re-drape/thread" the cable runs, then actually, this isn't all that non-viable, either.
