I think there is more to it. Look at the R&D at escort, Im sure they have a decent budget and can only produce a so so product.

You will need some serious cash and an engineer who understands electronics in and out. A good jammer is not developed overnight.

Then there is manufacturing, can be done pretty cheap, but would need a reliable vendor to do it.

As for open source that is useless, no profit in it.

I'm not looking for a proffit and escort understands something most dont. you dont need a jtg to keep out of most tickets and i bet their real r&d operation isnt that big.

once you really get into the technical side of lj's u realize theyre not complicated machines

Remember they said the same thing about open source software, there is no money in it and look at it now. Open source is not about making money it's about pushing the industry. And yes you can make money with open source. Something like this project could offer pre-assembled units( led, laser diode, or a combination) for a price and can also offer a kits to make your own (of course if you buy the kit there is no warranty on the product, but you pay a reduced price). The company would supply the parts to assemble the heads and maybe the cpu unit is only available pre-assembled. Also the software would be open source, that way people can tweak the software for new guns or to improve performance. Just imagine, a new gun comes out and within days there is already a new algorithm available for download. People could contribute new algorithms for testing and the company could tweak them and combine them to make it the best possible.

Don't take this the wrong way -- I'm all for having multiple countermeasures and anything you can add would be great.

    However...

Do we want the countermeasures market "pushed" to more people? I would think the market for this stuff is, by and large, still "flying under the radar," pun intended.

Many cops still think these RDs and jammers don't work. Increasing the market to more users just makes it harder for the rest of us enthusiasts to keep things quiet. If everyone knew the jammers worked there might be a concerted effort to make them illegal everywhere.

Just a thought. I'd rather pay extra for something that everyone knows doesn't work. Let me be stupid and waste my money.

Or maybe with this new "interweb" as they call it, the cat's out of the bag and lawmakers are just ignoring countermeasures because of the small population that uses them. Either way.

I'm not talking about pushing it on more people I'm talking about pushing the manufacturers to make better products. Classic example, IE and FireFox, Microsoft had basically the same design for years but once FireFox came out, they instantly had to upgrade to just be competitive.

Well, I would agree, but back to my original point that the LI isn't needing any upgrades that I can see, unless we want a RD/jammer/gps/navigation/phone/mp3 player/photon torpedo/espresso machine combo.

There is no such thing as no need for improvement, the second you say that is the second you get passed by. There is always something that can be improved on any product.

This wouldn't really be an improvement on the li it's just the li costs THIRTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS for a 4 head unit... to me that's asinine for something significantly less complicated than a PlayStation...

this is basically linux; cheap, opensource, very effective, hard to use, infintately customizeable vs. windows (li) closed architecture, expensive, works well but not for all

now please don't say i'm knocking LI; i know its a great product and if i could begin to afford even a 2 head one i'd buy it (and subsequently reverse engineer it cus thats just how i roll )... I'm not trying to compete I just want a more affordable infinately customizeable open source platform to play with... IF it happens to work well with some tweaking and good algo's then great; if it sucks and wont jam anything put a PL3 to 500' then i'll rethink things but at least I tried
