Default Laser diodes VS leds, some questions

I have been running around a little and trying to get my head around the use of Lasers diodes vs LED's and I have some questions

Since I have not had the pleasure of tearing apart an LI head I am wondering if it uses a single laser diode for each head or multiple units.

If it uses a single laser diode diffused over an area to make up a jammer head. that would make sense. High output power with a single laser diode could give you the power with a simpler circuit.

But for Led's has it always been an issue of power?. If so then the solution seems simple (see the video in "wanting to test home built jammer) At 180mw/sr per led it seems a cheaper solution for high power outputs.

If there is something I am missing please let me know. Perhaps the LI heads have less than a diffusion than I think they do. At first I thought perhaps they would be more precise but looking at an average unit n904nm 5mW Laser Diode it seems to have the same off peak behavior as a led.

interesting discussion I hope will follow

Regular LI's use one laser diode, HP LI's use 2. One oriented horizontal and one oriented vertical.

Solion is officially the new MEM-TEK. Only one problem with messing with the LEDs in a LED jammer - warranty. No more warranty after you modify it.

Maybe he is MEM-TEK with a new identity?

No he's not, unless he was wearing a really good disguise when we tested his last prototype.

I think it would be cool to take one of the Blinder heads, cut off the leads to one of the LEDs and run those to another home made head which basically amplifies the signal for a 2nd set of very high powered LEDs.

MEM-TEK mysteriously vanished shortly after his breakthrough...

I dont agree with this... it's kinda misleading... I garantee if you use an IR camera and put an HP LI head facing a dark surface, the pattern will be still horizontal or vertical, whatever way you're holding the head...
    Like this vid... http://www.outrunproductions.com/Laser/walt.wmv
Just for the sake of it, the reason LI has that strong horizontal pattern when the head is held horizontal as in the vid, it's because of the optics of the LI lense... that's where the secret is...

You are looking at the wrong kind of laser diodes. The laser diodes used in jammers aren't CW laser diodes, they are "pulsed" laser diodes with a much higher peak power. Last I knew, a few different jammer models used the Osram SPL PL90-3, which offers max 90W (yes WATTS) PEAK power at low pulse widths.

In the past, there have been some discussions on here regarding the diffusion/beam spread of these diodes (without any external optics).

Wasn't that around the same time Skynet became self-aware? No more messing with the Cyberdyne jammers...
