Thread: First Ticket

    Default First Ticket

Stupid question for you guys: Back in December I got pulled over for doing 98 in a 65 on the toll road in Austin. As stated this was my firs ticket. I plead no contest to the ticket since I was the only car on the road unfortunately. My question is, how much is this going to impact my insurance? I'm 19, under my parents policy, and it's through USAA. We have discounts for multiple cars, good student, as well as a defensive driving discount.

Theres a line in the movie Braveheart that sums this one up pretty well.

I would assume it would add about $100 to $200 onto your semi-annual premium granted this is your first ticket and you have no previous accidents being that you're only 19.

The ticket will be used to raise your rates for 3 years from conviction date. Don't say anything to USAA, though. In Texas, the DPS has contracted out with Choicepoint to handle the sales of MVRs to private insurance companies. They charge a hefty price (if I remember, it was like $7 bucks a pop), so a lot of insurance companies only check MVRs for everyone upon first application.

The insurance company I used to work for would only RANDOMLY check MVRs to keep costs down on renewal. I didn't work for USAA though. If you're quiet and lucky, they may not catch it for a little while.

Don't tell USAA, they never found out about a ticket I got when I lived in St. Louis. I don't think they check it very often.

USAA does a motor vehicle records check on all their policy holders about every 2 years.
I have USAA and this past Nov, in my policy renewal packet, they listed a speeding ticket wife got back in April, 2007 (She never told me about it; just paid the ticket and thought I'd never know about it....she's a dumbass.

Well thanks for the replys. It would be nice to not have it checked for a couple years and hopefully by then have my own insurance plan. It's nice to see people responding with specifics regarding USAA and Texas policies. Appreciate the grim but helpful news.

Here's another specific about USAA: You can't beat it! Keep it for as long as you can, which is probably forever. Once you get rid of it as an adult, you probably won't be able to get it again unless you become a military officer. That ticket is going to be on your record no matter who you have insurance through, so at least stay with the cheapest and best company. If you get rid of USAA, you will come to regret it some day as an adult.

Yeah, 1 ticket won't do much to the premium, given an overall good accident, citation, and claim record.

Did the officer cite you for reckless, or just write it up as a speeding ticket?

My credit score dropping 100 points in a year drove my insurance up more than two tickets would have.
