A CONTROVERSIAL speed camera on the A14 has been burned just a year after it became operational.

The camera, on the eastbound carriageway just past the junction with the A11 near Swaffham Bulbeck, was attacked when a tyre was put around it and set alight.

When the camera was installed last summer, Jim Paice, MP for South-East Cambridgeshire, criticised the site selection.

He said he was not aware the location had a bad accident record, but after being given figures by the Cambridgeshire Safety Camera Partnership he accepted it "just scraped in" to the criteria for putting up a new camera.

Four people were seriously injured and five were slightly injured in a three-year period.

Mr Paice said at the time: "It struck me as a daft place to put a camera, but if it stops accidents then obviously it is a good thing."

But since the camera has been in operation, members of the emergency services have claimed there have been more crashes in the area - caused by motorists suddenly slowing down when they see it.

The camera enforces a 70mph limit on a fast stretch of the dual carriageway where traffic from the A11 merges with traffic on the A14.
