NEW LENOX -- Residents can look forward to safer streets thanks to a program under way by the New Lenox Police Department.

A series of special efforts will be undertaken over the next year aiming at enforcing traffic laws and educating the public on traffic safety issues.

Projects that will receive increased resources include saturation traffic patrols, speeding enforcement, DUI enforcement, roadside safety checkpoints and targeting several problem intersections in the village.

"Traffic enforcement is a vital component of public safety," Cmdr. Robert Pawlisz said, "and through these increased efforts we hope to boost seatbelt use, decrease traffic problems involving alcohol and reduce injury and fatal collisions."

Funding for the program will come from two grants from the Illinois Department of Transportation, totaling over $33,000 through the National Highway Safety Administration.

"When more people drive safely, we save lives, families and money," Chief Dan Martin said.

"This grant will help make New Lenox just that much more of a safer place to live and work."
