    Default What speed limit?!

New York news radio station 1010 WINS had a story this morning about speeding through EZ-Pass lanes. As a radar detector user, I'm certain that some lanes have a Ka-band radar attached to them. I've occasionally seen troopers pulling people over after the tolls, but it was never clear to me if it was for toll evasion or speeding.

Makes me feel kinda stupid, since for all the flying I do down the highway, I'm that one jerk that actually goes just 15mph through the tolls. Duh.

In NH, I get laser hits going through the toll booths, but I believe they're coming from overhead (probably a vehicle size/trailer sensing system). But the EZ Pass FAQ does state they can suspend accounts of those who speed through too many times. Whether this is in force in NH, I don't know.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

they say and post 15MPH here in MA. People drive thru somewhat faster. It's definitely been an issue with toll collectors getting run down as they attempt to return to the office area. They say they will suspend your account here, too. I don't know how they are measuring speeds - - perhaps sensors in the ground??

15! I'd love to have it be 15 MPH in my toll booth right by where I live, as far as I can remember (I don't use the tollway much) out toll speed limit is 5 MPH.

Geez! Here in Florida I see 9/10 cars fly through EZ-Pass tolls at at least 40MPH, on a 65 highway. I would think 15 or even 5 would be a stalled vehicle. I personally don't use EZ-pass so I need to reach at least 0mph to throw my coins 8)

I think the limit in Houston, where I have an EZpass is 40 or 45 at the booths if you are in a EZPass lane. I go 55-65 and folks still want to run me over.

I usually try to stay pretty close to the limit just because I don't want to mow down some poor toll collector. I think people get pissed at me when I do that, though. As if blowing the booth at 40 is going to save any time at all.

Unrelated but kinda interesting: I read that someone is developing an EZ-pass system that doesn't require a reduction of speed at all to pay tolls. I guess the idea is to save fuel by eliminating those traffic jams. Kpatz knows what I'm talking about...Hampton tolls, Fourth of July weekend? Miles of needless backup. Of course that would require that every single motorist have an EZ-Pass transponder which is practically impossible.

The GSP southbound in NJ has a full-speed set of lanes at ~mile 130. The lanes split for EZ-Pass full-speed on the left and toll booths on the right. The toll booths also accept EZ-Pass. Seems to work well.
