Texas: License Plate Photo Tracking Legislation Moves ForwardAuthorities in Texas may soon have the ability to track the movement of specific automobiles around the state through traffic cameras.

A provision in a major Transportation Department reauthorization bill—that would also sunset red-light enforcement camera use and ban new red-light cams—also allows the state to enter into program for the photo identification of license plate.

The legislation, which is heading into conference, says the images could be use for enforcement of laws (other than traffic laws) and for other reasons including finding missing children and seniors.

Clever. Offer to give up Red Light Cameras so the public will buy into the program. Then, once the "license plate cameras" are everywhere, they flip a switch and start timing how long each car takes to get from Camera A to Camera B. If the time is too short, indicating that the vehicle was speeding, the citation automatically generates a citation and mails it off to the registered owner of the vehicle.

    Think it can't happen?

You bet it can and will. Don't they already do this in England?

I know. I am just saying unless there is some sort of provision in this new legislation that now legalizes speed cameras, that won't happen just yet.
