An effort to reinstate red-light cameras in Virginia Beach won preliminary approval Monday, 61-37, in the House of Delegates.
HB1778 would allow any locality in Virginia to place cameras in as many as 25 intersections.
The owners of cars photographed going through red lights would be mailed a $50 ticket.
The owners could file an affidavit in General District Court contending he or she was not driving the car pictured going through the light.
Under an amendment made by the House, the photo would be taken five-tenths of a second after the light turns red, instead of three-tenths of a second, to allow ample time for a driver to react to a changing light.
