Default mounting a radar in the grill

would it be a good idea to mount the radar detector in the front of my grille (so you cant see it) and then hardwire it and install a remote inside?

i wonder if having the radar detector up there will give better results

IMO, mounting in this location would reduce the effective range on radar reception, puls, all it would take is one little rock to bounce up in there and ruin your detector.

only benefit I see is against Laser..I see too many downs about this plan

    1) A RD cant atake the kind of heat of that engine bay

    2) like JD said, a simple pebble at those speeds will turn your RD into scrap

    3) TOTAL sacrifice in Rear Detection, (and since you mentioned a remote display Im assuming youve got a Valentine.......and thats the Valentines ONLY advantage against all the others)

thats all I have to say, try it if you wish, i gotta say itll be interesting to see the results

If it's mounted so that you can't see it, it's front face must be pretty well shielded already. But to ensure it's protected, just mount some clear plexiglass or something in front of the antenna.

    3) This is incorrect. RD's that don't have rear antennas (aka 99% of them) also pick up rear signals from waves that hit off of objects in front of your car and reflect back into the front antenna. Obviously mounting the RD to have a clear view front and back increases its ability to detect rear threats... but it's not the only way detection is achieved.

Take notice if you ever pass a radar source and you have a truck ahead of you. As you get closer to the truck, your signal will increase due to the reflections bouncing off of it. Also, try putting your RD on the floor. More likely than not it'll still pick up signal (not as good obviously...) even in that horrible location.

Other radar detectors might pick up reflected waves but I found this link that shows that the V1 beats the 8500 by 2 miles in rear detection.

That's because the V1 has a rear antenna and the others don't.

Why on earth would you want to know that there's a LEO 2.5 miles behind you?

You can spot something closing in from behind. You also need the second antenna for the directional arrows to pinpoint the approximate direction of the signal. The direction can indicate the source of the signal and from what I read here many V1 users are happy with that. From personal experience I can confirm that it is nice to have an idea where the radar source is.

And the real question is, why wouldn't you want better range regardless of direction ?

I was merely ststing that the Rear antenna of the V1, its one BIG advantage, is totally useless, YES you can pick up rear signals with just a front antenna, as an X50 user I KNOW THAT, because thats my only defense against that s**t

I can appreciate that you need the second horn for the location of the source to be determined. I just don't see any real life utility in knowing there's a LEO 2.5 miles behind me.

It's highly unlikely he can see you. You can't see him. What's the point?
