I am not sure of the accuracy of any of the information below so use your own judgement.

I have heard that this is the order of highest sales to lowest.

    1. Cobra
    2. Bel/Escort
    3. Whistler
    4. V1

Not that I believe Craig Peterson from radartest.com but he claims the V1 has a .6 percent market share.

The combined companies(Beltronics and Escort) have annual sales of about $50 million, about 30 percent of the overall radar-detector market.

Blair won't divulge sales figures but says Escort has captured about 25 percent of the radar detector market, behind industry leader Cobra.

"Whistler says it will continue to meet its customers' demands for radar detectors. The company began in 1971 with handheld marine radar and is now considered to be the detector market leader, with an estimated market share of more than 35%."

He would rather buy an rd that lasted 4+ years without any issues then pay the same amount for a better radar detector like a bel that would last 1+ years.

Everyone has their reasoning and logic, and if you think about it he has a good reason for getting a cobra. If you pay $200 for an rdd that will last 3+ years vs $200 for a better one that will last only 1 year why not get the 3+ year one? it has more value even if it isn't the best on the market like a v1.

people buy cobra for more than just cuz of their ads or that they are in more stores.
That logic is faulty though...I just upgraded my V1 1.7 that I had had since 1998-1999. It worked just fine with only 2 tune ups the entire time. You should educate him about RD's.
