Default Distance Radar can pick up speed

What is the actual distance that a radar can pick up speed with a clear line of sight. The reason I ask is that I was thinking yesterday that the return radar (after hitting object) is weaker so how weak can the signal be before the unit doesn't pick it back up.

Yesterday I got hit with Ka on a straight 2 mile stretch. My STI went off forever, until I passed the car and it quickly stopped, so it doesnt pick up the return signal nearly as well as the original. THat is what made me start thinking about this

I think this is going to depend on several factors...

What Radar band and transmit power is being used
How many targets are on the road and their relative positions
How big is the target vehicle
    Humidity, etc

If you are the only car on the road, I suspect the distance is pretty good 1/2-3/4 miles??? Some experienced radar shooters should chime in here...

Radar from a gun can acquire your speed in most conditions at approximately a maximum of 3000ft in moving mode, and a maximum 5500ft in stationary mode, how much more sensitivity do you really need? An extra 500, 1000ft, 3000ft? It only takes a few seconds to slow down. Besides the fact that the LEO needs to be able to make out who is speeding and 3000ft would be difficult to see.
